WEEK 4 PARTICLE NATURE OF MATTER
2
DEFINITI0N Matter is anything that has weight/mass and can occupy a space. Examples of matter are air we breath, table, water, etc.
3
EVIDENCE OF PARTICLE NATURE OF MATTER Brownian motion. Law of Definite proportion. Diffusion. Osmosis. We have no direct evidence of these particle, since we cannot observe them with even the most powerful microscope. All the evidence are indirect evidence.
4
PROPERTIES OF MATTER Exertion of pressure Movement Elasticity Resistivity / Conductivty Specific heat capacity
5
STATE OF MATTER Solid Liquid Gaseous
6
PROPERTIES OF MATTER COMMON TO ALL STATES They all have weight. They all occupy space. There is existence of intermolecular force between molecules of matter.
7
STRUCTURE OF MATTER Molecule is the smallest particle of a substance which can have a separate existence while still keeping the property of the substance. For example, a grain of maize can be ground into powder. Atom is the smallest particle of an element which can have a separate existence. Therefore, a molecule is also defined as a group of atoms of the same or different elements joined together in simple proportion.

ASSIGNMENT 4 Explain the different states of matter Explain how the size of a molecule can be determine
