Prereading Survey the text. What do you see? Are there titles? Subtitles? Charts, graphs, or pictures? What is the length of the reading? Make a prediction: What is this reading about? Scan the reading. Circle any new vocabulary words (words that you can’t define).

Step 1: Number the Paragraphs Before you read, take a moment to number the paragraphs in this reading selection. Paragraph numbers will serve as a reference so that you can easily find important points for later discussions.

Step 2: Circle Key terms What is a key term? 1.Names of people, historical events, dates and numbers 2.Words repeated in reading (only circle them the first time they appear) 3.New vocabulary words/content area vocabulary 4.Signal words (words that are bolded, underlined, italicized, or written in all CAPS) 5.Words defined by author 6.Words used to explain/represent an idea 7.Words used in an original way 8.Main idea 9.Important to one’s reading purpose
