Segregation Author: Jacqueline Woodson The Other Side G.P. Putnam’s Sons (NY); 2001 Book Summary: The Other Side is a book about segregation. The story is told through the eyes of a little African American girl, who becomes confused about the fence that someone has built in her yard and the racial tension that divides her world from the White people’s world. She later becomes friends with a White girl but they are only allowed to play on the fence that separates their houses. Setting: In a Southern town after the Civil War. What would you do? Imagine you are Clover and you were told not to go on the other side of the fence because it was not safe. Would you be curious to go on the other side on the fence? Write down what you would do if you were Clover in this situation? And why you would do this.

How would your life be different? During segregation, African American children and White children were not allowed to go to the same school, and therefore could not be friends. Think about your best friend. Imagine you were a child who lived during segregation and you were not allowed to go to the same school as him/her and you could not be friends. In a simulated journal, write how your life would be different and how you would feel.

How did lives change? Segregation began in 1849 and ended in 1954 because Brown V Board of Education declared that segregated schools were unconstitutional. Segregation is over Make a timeline of five events to show how life changed for people when segregation ended.
