Learning Targets I can develop and use strategies for dividing a fraction by a fraction. I can use models and number sentences to represent division of a fraction by a fraction within context. I can understand when division is an appropriate operation.

We have already learned to divide fractions that have either the dividend or the divisor as a whole number. Now we are going to look at problems that involve two fractions.

Example 1: Chocolate Bars Suppose you have half of a large chocolate bar and your cookie recipe calls for of a bar. How many cookie recipes can you make with a half bar of chocolate? Think about this for a minute. What are we trying to find in this problem? How many there are in. Is this a sharing or a grouping problem? We are trying to find how many batches (groups) we can make that are of the size given. So this is a grouping problem.
