2.  Born August 2, 1924  When he was young he was adopted by David Baldwin  He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx  When he was 17 years old, Baldwin turned away from his religion and moved to Greenwich Village  He studied at The New School

3.  He began to write short stories, essays, and book reviews  Baldwin died November 30, 1987 at the age of 63 in Saint-Paul de Vence, France

4.  Baldwin left the United States and departed to Paris, France  He fled in order to see himself and his writing beyond an African American context  While in Paris Baldwin started to be published in literary anthologies

5.  Baldwin's first novel was Go Tell It on the Mountain, an autobiographical bildungsroman  He wrote several other books and essays for example Down at the Cross, No Name in the Street, and many others
