Panama panama is located between the southern pacific ocean and the Caribbean sea. A country of southeast Central America. The region was inhabited by a variety of Indian peoples when Columbus landed on its Caribbean coast in 1502. In 1513 Balboa crossed the isthmus to discover the Pacific Ocean. Controlled by Spain until 1821, the area then became part of Colombia. Eager for a canal across the isthmus, the United States supported a revolution leading to Panamanian independence in 1903. Panama is the capital. Population: 3,240,000.

The United States’ Relationship with Panama Relations connected to the control, operation, and future of the canal were conducted within the framework of the Panama Canal treaties. Current relationship characterized by extensive counternarcotics cooperation, support to promote Panama’s economic, political, and social development, and a bilateral FTA (free trade agreement)

The reason the U.S intervened in Panama is because they want safeguard the lives of Americans, to defend democracy in Panama, to combat drug trafficking, and to protect the integrity of the Panama Canal Treaty. The president of that period was Manuel Amador Guerrero. The types of forces used in the Panama canal were the U.S army. Their reaction was that they were very grateful for our help.

Panama: Ally or Enemy? Panama is currently an ally of ours. A positive outlook on America was taken and the close relationship with the U.S continued after the U.S returned the sovereignty of the Canal. Panama agreed to grant fast passage to U.S warships and both countries are called to defend the Canal from any threats under the Neutrality Treaty of 1977.

Group’s Evaluation on U.S Intervention in Panama We, as a group, think that the U.S intervention in Panama was indeed beneficial for both countries. Today, Panama and the United States share a close relationship with each other as allies. We feel that the U.S did the right thing in intervening with issues in Panama. The benefit from the intervention was the Panama Canal. It provides a passage for U.S warships and trade ships.
