Tuesday, January 15 Flu hits the U.S. H7N3 virus is detected in airline passengers arriving in several U.S. cities.

Public Health Agencies Respond CDC declares the outbreak a pandemic. Public Health depts. around the country try to implement social distancing measures. Local and state flu plans are activated.

Status on UW campus Winter quarter began on schedule. Key UW personnel are not reachable over the MLK weekend. Some UW unions are in the midst of collective bargaining negotiations.

Flu effects in the region Hall Health and the UW Medical Center see a notable surge in people presenting with influenza symptoms. ERs and doctor’s offices report large increases in patients with flu-like symptoms. Fear about the high mortality rate of this flu strain has caused more people than usual to seek care.

Message 5 ACCD recommends that the UW Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activate at level 2. You are sick with the flu and couldn’t make the meeting over the weekend. Your back-up is also feeling sick. The EOC needs a rep from your unit. January 15

Message 6 Many of your staff and faculty have called in sick. You receive numerous requests for clarification of policies regarding: Sick leave Health insurance Caring for ill relatives Personal protection 50% of one job class has called in sick. January 15

Message 7 UW authorities instruct your unit to identify essential personnel. Many of your key staff have called in sick. January 15

Message 8 Local media are featuring interviews with UW students, faculty, and staff. One newspaper reports misleading and inaccurate details about the UW’s handling of the outbreak. Your unit was identified in the article. January 15
