The American System: The country would grow by itself 1. Est. a protective tariff- a high tax on imported goods = buy American! 2. Est. a national bank- single currency (one paper note) 3. Improve the country’s transportation system- important for strong economy

Roads and Canals National Road-MD to Illinois Erie Canal- Made travel between roads and cities easier Increased western settlement & trade United the upper Ohio R.Valley and Great Lakes Region Helped New York City become the nation’s largest city

Era of Good Feelings -James Monroe won the presidency in 1816 (Dem-Rep) Federalist Party soon disappears Loyalty to federal gov. -Supreme Court cases strengthened the federal gov. –McCulloch v Maryland – States could not tax a national bank –Gibbons v Ogden – interstate commerce could be regulated ONLY by the federal govt, no the state govt -States could not interfere w/federal laws.

SECTIONALISM What is Sectionalism? Loyalty to the interests of your own region or section of the country, rather than to the nations as a whole A threat to Nationalism Conflict of interests between South, Northeast, and West South: relied on cotton and slavery Northeast: manufacturing and trade West: settlers wanted cheap land and good transportation

Boundary Settlements Britain gave U.S. new northern territory –Minn. & Mich. –Americans were having problems with Seminoles raids in E. Goergia. Monroe sent Jackson down to stop the raids, but not confront the Spain. Adams-Onis Treaty – gains Florida from Spain and their claims in the Oregon Territory U.S. border to the Pacific 49 th Parallel = boundary of U.S. and Canada

Missouri Compromise Missouri applies for statehood 1817–wanted to be admitted as a slave state Currently the United States is balanced with 11 slave states, 11 free states “If you persist, the Union will be dissolved.
