GEORGE WASHINGTON 1789-1797 Federal court system was established The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution of the United States. Plans were initiated for development of the national capital in Washington D.C., and Benjamin Banneker, an African American astronomer and surveyor, helped complete the design for the city.

JOHN ADAMS 1797-1801 President from Massachusetts A Two -party system emerged (came about) during his administration (Federalists and Democratic-Republicans) He had a cautious but forceful foreign policy (he kept us from going to war with France, but still built up our navy and army)

THOMAS JEFFERSON 1801-1809 He bought the Louisiana territory from France This was known as the Louisiana Purchase Lewis and Clark explored this new land west of the Mississippi river.

JAMES MADISON 1809-1817 The War of 1812 caused European nations to gain RESPECT for the United States Hint: “MAD” about the war = Madison

JAMES MONROE 1817-1825 He wrote the Monroe Doctrine warning European nations NOT to interfere in the Western Hemisphere. While he was president, the United States acquired Florida through a treaty with Spain
