1 Extra Information How to know if there is extra information in a math problem.

2 Problem: Jane is selling cookies. Each cookie cost 25 cents. If her friend bought 12 cookies how much did it cost? Her friend ate 6 cookies. There is sometimes extra information in a problem like this one. A reader who reads carefully will get this answer: $3.00 25 x12 50 250 300 1 A reader who speeds through the problem will get this answer: $1.50 The reader who speeds through the problem did the wrong math sentence cause they got tricked when it said she ate 6 cookies. 6 x25 150 12 6 0 12

3 Can you try some problems and not get tricked? Remember what the problem is asking. Not every problem has extra information but some do. It is ok if you don’t get the answer right.

4 Mrs.Butler has to grade 22 math papers. She has 19 science papers to grade too. She also has to grade 14 social studies quizzes. Mrs.Beck has to grade 12 math papers. She has 17 science papers to grade and she also has to grade 20 social studies quizzes. How many math and science papers do both teachers combined need to grade?

5 If you got the answer that: The two teachers need to grade seventy math and science papers combined. 6 The library has about 150 students come in a day and about 10 teachers that come in. The teachers that come in get about 3 books. The students get about 2 books each. About how many books does 150 students check out combined?

7 If you answered: The students check out about 300 books a day combined. If you didn’t get the answer right here is how you could solve it: 150 x 2 300 Students Books that are checked out A: About 300 books are checked out a day by the students.

8 Good job! Extra information is not always in a problem but there are sometimes. An easy way to catch extra information is to say to your self is this important or not.

9 Cars have four tires. They also have four seats. How many tires do 128 cars have? What is important and what is not? Circle the information that is not important.

11 Sometimes there can be a problem with a chart that has extra information.
