Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Agenda Warm up Sci Method lab pts 1 and 2. ISN Prep HW: write your conclusion for today’s lab Warm Up Have ISN out and ready for lab. :)
2
Announcements Wednesday: Sci Method lab + write up Thursday: back to school night 5:30p (5pts xtra credit); Sci Method - variables Friday: Quiz (Sci method, nature of science) ISN Notebook check NEXT FRIDAY (9/30/11)

conclusion On a separate sheet of paper: Include the question and your answer. Use complete sentences. 1.How does gum stretchability relate to bubble size? 2.With your lab partner, list 5 variables that may affect the outcome of this experiment. 3.Explain how the data you collected can be described as both qualitative and quantitative 4.List any questions you still have about the scientific method.
4
Scientific Method Lab Put the lab handout with materials, observation table, problem, and hypothesis on PAGE 21 Write in the procedure from the screen on PAGE 22 Include proper date, title, heading

PROCEDURE copy into ISN 1. The person with brand A will chew their piece of gum for 3 minutes. The person with brand B does not begin chewing until all the tests on brand A are completed. 2. Blow a bubble. 3. Using a string, your partner will measure the diameter (distance across) the bubble. Put the string on the meter stick to measure the distance in centimeters (cm). Page 22 ISN
6
PROCEDURE 4. Record the measurement in a data table. Repeat the process for trials 2 and 3. 5. Find the average bubble size for brand A (add all the distances up and divide by 3) and put in the data chart. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 with brand B gum. Page 22 ISN
7
Data table & conclusion (p 23) Data Table: Design a data collection table to fit the data you will be investigating Conclusion: Forming a theory What brand of gum is the best at blowing bubbles and why? Support your answer with observations and your data. Page 23 ISN

PROCEDURE pt 2 1. The person with brand A will roll their gum into a ball. 2.Hold the gum (brand A) by using the piece of wax paper. Another person in the group would hold the same piece of gum with another piece of wax paper. Hold the gum near your chest and begin to walk slowly backwards. Page 24 ISN

INGREDIENTS Dubble Bubble : Sugar, dextrose, corn syrup (glucose), gum base, high fructose corn syrup, corn starch, artificial flavors, artificial color (FD&C RED 3), bht (to maintain freshness) Original Bazooka: Sugar, gum base, corn syrup, natural & artificial flavors, citric acid, red 40 lake, red 40, bht (preservative) :)
10
PROCEDURE pt 2 3. The third person in the group should hold the meter stick and measure the distance in centimeters the gum stretched before breaking. 4. Record the measurement in the data chart. ONLY DO ONE TRIAL 5. Repeat #1-4 for brand B gum. Page 24 ISN

Scientific Method Is A Cycle On a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture/diagram that shows how the scientific method is a cycle. :0

ISN Prep Continue updating your ISN. Add ALL page numbers Update the TOC Finish page 10: Unit Title Page for Nature of Science Finish page 0: Author page
