2. “The muttering and growling of the sea breaking on a rocky shore.” “Jagged crags appeared to jut into the opaqueness.” “Dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs. What perils that tangle of trees and underbrush might hold for him did not concern Rainsford just then. All he knew was that he was safe from his enemy, the sea…” The description of the island creates a dangerous setting. The author uses words like “muttering and growling” and “perils that tangle of trees” that show this is not a safe environment for Rainsford. None of this alarms Rainsford because his main focus was to get away form the sea. This foreshadows that the island will end up being more dangerous then Rainsford thinks.

3. “But it was no mirage, he found, when he opened the tall spiked iron gate. The stone steps were real enough; the massive door with a leering gargoyle for a knocker was real enough; yet about it all hung an air of unreality. He lifted the knocker, and it creaked up stiffly, as if it had never been used before.” Richard Connell describes the building with words like “tall spiked” and “leering gargoyle” which creates a eerie mood. This introduces more signs that the island is a dangerous environment. Rainsford still decides to knock on the door which reveals that he is a risky person.
