2 The Names in Candide: Candide -- From the Latin word candidus: white, pure, honest. Cunegonde -- From the Latin word cunnus: a derogatory term for a woman’s vagina. (Yes, Voltaire was a naughty boy!) Also from St. Kunigunde the wife of Henry II, Duke of Bavaria.

3 Names Continued… Cacambo -- Caca: A child’s term for feces. Also an allusion to the New World items cacao and cacahuete (peanut). Pangloss -- From the Greek pan (all) and glossa (tongue) to mean ‘all tongue’, and imply all talk and no action. There are several other names with special meanings, make sure to read A Note on Names near the beginning of the book.

4 Terms: In the story, Optimism refers to a philosophical school popular at the time of Voltaire’s life, and not the modern day meaning of the word. Optimism -- ‘the best possible world’ or ‘all that is and happens is for the best’
