Conclusions Four sediment cores were collected in 2014 from the Gulf of Cagliari in the thalwegs of submarine canyons (depth range 600-900m). 210 Pb and 137 Cs dating for A2TM and A3TM cores provides the pollution history of the most populated and industrialised area of Sardinia. Regional natural background levels for trace elements are defined for the first time: Pb = 25 mg/kg, As = 13 mg/kg, Hg = 0,03 mg/kg. Highest Enrichment Factors values were observed for Pb, As and Hg with an increasing trend starting from the 1970s for the A3TM core and from the 1940s for the A2TM core, pointing out a significant anthropogenic input.
