10 CHOICE 2: ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LETTER Medieval Monks copied the pages of books by hand and richly decorated the more important pages of prayer, or Religious poems. The first letter of a page was enlarged and elaborated into a complex colour design. Gold was often used, causing it to shine, and hence the name Illuminated Manuscript letter.
