Hard Chrome Alternatives Team (HCAT) Program for Hard Chrome Replacement OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate and validate high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coatings as cost- effective and technologically superior alternative to electrolytic hard chromium in most maintenance operations at Navy, Air Force, and Army aircraft depots and in manufacturing operations at Defense Department OEMs Establish superior performance of thermal spray coatings to hard chrome, leading to increased time intervals between required maintenanceEstablish superior performance of thermal spray coatings to hard chrome, leading to increased time intervals between required maintenance Demonstrate reduced turn around times for repair of components using thermal sprayDemonstrate reduced turn around times for repair of components using thermal spray

Surface Engineering n Surface engineering technologies, selected based on performance and ability to be implemented, can impact both sustainability, cost and readiness n The projects being executed by the HCAT in partnership with JG-PP, PEWG and the services represent the ideal for pollution- prevention-related efforts, namely the marriage of environmental benefit with total cost reduction and readiness enhancement
5
Hard Chrome Plating Replacement Projects n Landing Gear (HCAT, C-HCAT, JG-PP, Air Force, Navy, OEMs) n Propeller Hubs (HCAT, JG-PP, Air Force, Navy, OEMs) n Gas Turbine Engines (HCAT, PEWG, Air Force, Navy, OEMs) n Hydraulic Actuators (HCAT, JG-PP, Air Force, Navy, OEMs) n Helicopter Dynamic Components (HCAT, JG-PP, Navy, Army, OEMs)
6
Other HCAT-Managed Projects n Chromium replacement on internal surfaces using small-gun plasma spraying, SERDP funded, FY2000-2003 n Electrospark Deposition for Depot- and Field- Level Component Repair, and Replacement of Hard Chromium Plating, jointly managed by PEWG and HCAT, ESTCP- and AF-funded, FY2002-2005
