Geometry 1-1 Points, Lines, and Planes

Building Blocks of Geometry  Point: Names a location; Has no size. Names a location; Has no size.  Line: Straight path that has no thickness; extends forever –Named with 2 points or a lower-case cursive letter  Plane: flat surface that has no thickness; extends forever –Named with 3 points or an upper-case cursive letter P TR l L M N P

Lines and Planes  Collinear : Points that lie on the same line.  Noncollinear: Points that do not lie on the same line.  Coplanar: Points that lie on the same plane.  Noncoplanar: Points that do not lie on the same plane.

Segments and Rays  Line segment: A part of a line. Does not extend forever  Ray: a line that extends forever in one direction  Opposite Rays: two rays that start at the same point but go in opposite directions

Key Theorems  If two lines intersect, their intersection is a _________.  If two planes intersect, their intersection is a _________.  If a line and a plane intersect, their intersection is a _________. Point Line Point

Know the difference A line in a plane A line intersecting a plane
