Protective Coloration Also known as camouflage, protective coloration helps an organism to hide in its environment. This can assist not only the prey, but the predator.

Beak Design Birds have all different sizes and shapes of beaks for different purposes.

Kestrel Have small, sharp beaks to allow them to tear flesh from their prey.

Hummingbird Have a long, thin beak to allow them to sip nectar from flowers.

Discussion Questions Describe a beak that would be good for breaking open hard nuts. Describe a beak that would be good for digging insects out of cracks in rocks. How could we explain seeing both of these beaks in the same habitat?
