UNIT 4 Properties and Algebraic Notation
2
Unit 4: Lesson 1 Learning Targets I can use properties to simplify expressions and solve equations I can evaluate an expression, and solve equations that involve parentheses. Homework H&R pp. 89-90
3
Lesson 1 (cont’d): Properties Vocabulary words: Expression, Equation, Simplify, Terms An expression is one or more numbers, variables, or numbers and variables with one or more operations. Examples: 46x6x-57+4 An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal. It has an equal sign. Examples: 40+25=65(16÷4)-3=1
4
Modeling & guided practice… Use the Identity Property to simplify each expression. 1) n+5n= 2) 17t+t= 3) x+245x= Turn and talk to someone near you. What did you notice about what it means to simplify?
5
Independent practice… 4) 9e-e= 5) 8c+c+c= 6) (5z-z)-z= Turn & Talk with a different partner this time: What have you learned about simplifying expressions? What does it mean to “collect like terms”?
6
Expressions & Equations 21) 9n=144 22) s+170=184 23) 105÷h=21
