What is foreign policy? Foreign Policy: everything a nation's government says and does in world affairs Location, desire for certain natural resources, trade, and morals influence U.S. foreign policy

The United Nations Goal: the maintain global peace Security Council: a 15-member panel that bears the UN's major responsibility for keeping international peace Five permanent members (U.S., U.K., Russia, China, and France) Main problem: Each of the 5 permanent members has the power to veto any proposal considered by the council

Current Foreign Policy Latin America Continued support for democratic governance Assist nations in the region in the fight against violent drug cartels and trafficking of humans and drugs Africa Assist nations in dealing with health issues such as AIDS and Ebola Promote democracy across the continent Fight terrorism against Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabaab in Somalia

Foreign Policy in Asia Stop North Korea’s nuclear weapons program Develop peaceful coexistence with China Strengthen relations with Japan, South Korea, India, and Australia to counter the rise of an aggressive China Support stable governments and fight terrorism in Afghanistan

Foreign Policy in Europe Participate in the collective security of Europe through NATO Article V: “an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or in North America shall be considered an attack against them all” Promote the respect for the sovereignty of Ukraine and other former members of the Soviet Union

Foreign Policy in the Middle East Based on two issues: long-standing support of Israel and the flow of oil out of the region Support for a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Support for a democratic, inclusive Syria not led by Bashar al Assad or radical cults Destruction of the Islamic State
