4. US INVOLVEMENT: PEARL HARBOR On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States Naval Base in Hawaii. They did this to keep the US from getting involved in what Japan was trying to do overseas. Obviously, that backfired because this is the reason the United States entered the war. 2,403 people were killed and over 1,000 more were injured. Hundreds of innocent civilians also lost their lives in this tragedy.

6. LEADERS OF THE ALLIES (FDR) The two leaders of the Allies are Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Franklin Roosevelt served as president of the United States for all but four months of World War II (1941-1945), leading the country through one of the toughest periods in its history. When the Nazi Germany invaded Soviet Union in 1941, FDR gave financial and military support to the Soviet Union. Franklin Roosevelt gave diplomatic and financial support to China and Britain to counter Japan and Nazi Germany. FDR was also very popular because of how he acted when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

7. HARRY S. TRUMAN Truman is not known to be one of our better presidents in the United States He took over for FDR when he died while he was still in office. Truman is known for basically ending the US’s involvement in World War II by dropping 2 atomic bombs on Japan in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

8. WINSTON CHURCHHILL Winston Churchill (1874-1965) served as the prime minister of Great Britain from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He led Britain's fight against Nazi Germany in World War II. A close friend of American presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, Churchill hoped to join the Americans in helping improve world order. Winston Churchill was also a very powerful speaker who has countless influential quotes that we still use today. “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill.

9. JOSEPH STALIN Stalin was the General Secretary of the Communist Party Under the leadership of Stalin, the Soviet Union played a major role in the defeat of Hitler's Germany during World War II. Stalin realized that without help, Germany would triumph. President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill agreed to limited cooperation with Stalin, concluding that Nazi Germany was, in fact, far worse a threat than Communist Russia. In return, Stalin pledged his aid in the war against Japan once Germany had been defeated.

11. LEADERS OF THE FASCIST POWERS (HITLER) Adolph Hitler is known to be one of the most violent, powerful, dictators in recent history. He is responsible for the murder of millions of Jewish people during his lifetime. He organized concentration camps where Jews would die everyday from terrible and unsafe working conditions. Born in Austria in 1889, Adolf Hitler rose to power in German politics as leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, also known as the Nazi Party. Hitler was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, and served as dictator from 1934 to 1945. His policies precipitated World War II and the Holocaust.

12. BENITO MUSSOLINI Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) was the fascist prime minister of Italy from 1922 until he was overthrown in 1943. In May 1938, Mussolini promised to fight alongside Adolf Hitler in any war against the democracies of the world. His armies, however, poorly led and ill-prepared for war, were defeated quickly by Allied forces. Benito Mussolini had a “thirst for military glory” that was part of the reason for his downfall as a leader. He was very smart and savy, but was unable to be a successful leader because he was obsessed with his military policies.

13. HIDEKI TOJO Hideki Tojo was the general of the Imperial Japanese Army. He was elected Prime Minister in 1941. As Prime Minister, he was responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, which initiated war between Japan and the United States.
