Working to engineer a better world Inspiring future engineers 1

Working to engineer a better world Introducing the IET  Global professional members organisation for engineers  Almost 160,000 members in 127 countries  Over 140 years of history  The IET works with STEM organisations, government, educators and industry to encourage young people to consider careers in engineering  The UK need to double the number of engineering graduates and apprentices each year to meet demand

Working to engineer a better world The IET Education 5-19 programme…  is for students of all abilities  develops students’ employability and practical skills  develops a better understanding of engineering in students, teachers and parents  offers programmes that appeal to girls and boys  enables science, maths, D&T and computing teaching with an engineering context  better enables students to make informed careers choices

Working to engineer a better world Key messages Students Teachers Lecturers Opinion formers Parents Engineering is inclusive and open to all Engineering shapes our world Engineering is fascinating and challenging Engineering offers a wide range of rewarding careers Engineering has a hugely positive impact on our lives and well-being Choosing appropriate STEM, D&T & computing subjects at school & FE leads to more course and career options

Working to engineer a better world IET Faraday teaching resources www.ietfaraday.org www.ietfaraday.org  FREE teaching resources and lesson activities for secondary teachers  For Science, Maths, Design & Technology, Computing and Engineering  Linked to the different UK curricular  Posters – electrical, electronic, engineering in context and careers  Profiles of engineers, links to careers information

Working to engineer a better world IET Faraday Challenge Days  FREE, off-timetable, engineering-based challenge day  For Year 8 (ages 12-13) students  36 students (6 teams of 6) per event  Registration available May – July  Events from Sept - May  Only 57 events per year  Run your own event  DIY Faraday Challenge Days instructions available for free from the IET Faraday website

 Global robotics-based life-skills challenge  20,000+ teams globally; 430+ in the UK  Ages 9-16 (Junior FLL for ages 6-9)  UK teams were World Festival Champions 2013 & 2014  Competitors:  Design, build & program an autonomous robot  Undertake creative problem solving  Create innovative solutions to real-world challenges  Develop valuable career and life skills  Utilise inquiry-based learning  Develop their ability to work in teams Sponsored by FIRST® LEGO® League www.firstlegoleague.co.uk www.firstlegoleague.co.uk

Working to engineer a better world IET STEM Ambassadors  Professional engineers and technicians, IET members  DBS checked and trained  Volunteer their time to work with schools, science festivals and careers events  Part of the national STEM Ambassador programme managed by STEMNET

Working to engineer a better world Tomorrow’s Engineers careers resources www.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk www.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk  Information about engineering careers  Routes through university and apprenticeships  Website - information for students, teachers and parents  Hardcopy materials  Posters  Postcards  Information leaflets  Booklets on university engineering courses

Working to engineer a better world Funding Education Fund Annual funding - grants up to £5000 for regional educational engineering projects School Grants Scheme Termly funding – grants up to £500 for school physics, engineering and technology activities Scholarships Range of IET scholarships including Diamond Scholarships, Power Academy, E3 Academy for students entering IET-accredited engineering degrees
