Matt Portas/Paul Connolly What you need for students to visit and video What forms you need to complete tonight to gain a baseline of where you are What forms you need to complete prior to your 1-1 session What you can expect from your 1-1 session Your action plan from your 1-1 How you can educate your other club coaches What is self reflection and how can it be used to benefit your coaching
10
Ultimate aim enable you to reflect deeply on your coaching and improve your practice
11
Ahead of the visit Organise consent Session plan Details of where to find & contact you Area identified where filming can be done from
12
Video analysis A very powerful but underused tool Who has watched and analysed themselves coaching before? Pick up subtle as well as more obvious feedback about your coaching See what others see when you coach Pause, reflect, rewind, review
13
Video session The session will be recorded at your coaching venue by a TU student You will wear a microphone A CD of the session will be send to you Self evaluation and reflection of the session Peer evaluation (possibly) 1-1 Session gaining session feedback Action plan developed
14
Video feedback See SCUK Strive hand-out We’ll also use the ASUOI
15
Why do this? Further develop your skills as a reflective practitioner o Peer and/or mentor input o more importantly empowerment & development as a self- reflective practitioner
16
Self-reflection
17
Self-reflection
18
Why is reflection important? It’s the heart of the learning process! Regulation of thoughts, feelings & actions Links experience and knowledge and enables adjustments to be made During event reflection – we do this all the time!
19
Why is reflection important? Post-event reflection o Not done in detail as often as we should o What happened in the session in relation to the aims o Needs time and space to be more considered o e.g. could you have used a different drill, cue or explanation to get a better response from the athlete/s o Action plan based on reflection
20
Reflection exercise Think of a scenario that has happened recently in your coaching and summarise this for someone to read (bullet points) Share this with someone nearby……
21
How far round the reflection wheel did they get?
22
What we need to reflect well Issue identification – often a gut feeling Self awareness (hence the self analysis handouts) Critical assessment o During activity – surface & preliminary o Post activity – involves more searching of relating feelings & knowledge Leads to deeper analysis & often a clearer way forward Challenging personal assumptions Advice from peers or experts Finding new knowledge o Experimentation o Evaluation
23
Personal Analysis Who you are and what you aims are What you see as your strengths and development needs
