The American Bald Eagle has a white head and black feathers on its body. It has sharp talons on its feet. The feet are orange colored. It has a sharp, curved beak for tearing meat. The Bald Eagle has extremely keen eyesight and can see great distances. It has a wing span of 7 ½ feet.

The American Bald Eagle lives near the water. Half of the population lives in Alaska. They migrate to Texas, Louisiana, and along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Found along the northwestern coast of the USA

Two eggs are laid. They build their nests in trees. The parents take care of the eaglets for 75 days. They are dark brown for six years and then the white head feathers come in. Bald eagles can live for up to 30 years.

They are carnivores. They use their sharp beaks to tear flesh. Sea otters and salmon are their favorite food. They do eat other birds and small mammals.

They can fly at 100 mph when diving for prey. The Bald Eagle is the national emblem of the USA. Their eyes are fixed in their head (They have to turn their head to see to the right or left.). They were endangered because of pesticides and hunting. They are now protected. Their cry sounds like the creak of a rusty hinge. It is called the bald eagle because “pie bald” means black & white.
