Delivered English and maths training to employed to help sustain and progress in work or education Funded to deliver 50 qualifications – finished contract with 450 qualifications and 150 in midlands. Success rate of 98% - a lot of learners moving to level 2 English or maths emskills.org.uk

Objectives Deliver a programme in 360 glh (12 -14 weeks) 16 -18 year olds, EHE 15 year olds. Vocational qualification (customer services) English and maths Employability skills Work Placement – getting them ready for work emskills.org.uk

Week 1 - 3 IAG, Building confidence, teambuilding, goal setting, developing skills, health and safety, first aid, English, maths, ICT, work skills, interview skills, taster sessions, preparing for work placement and work visits. Week 4 - 10 Work placement - training and assessment (at least 3 days in the work place, 2 days in classroom). Work placements in construction, telesales, cycle maintenance, retail, administration or floristry. Week 11 - 12 Completing qualifications, researching further opportunities, preparing for progression into work or further training (including apprenticeships), arranging interviews, award ceremony. Courses start every 3 weeks in Hoddesdon or Harlow. Work placements will be in locations that are easy to get to by public transport. All candidates paid a weekly attendance fee, lose it if they don’t come in! Unauthorised attendance.

We don’t force them to come but do encourage. Provide toast, coffee, tea, water and juice. Week 1 IAG, rule setting, getting ready for placement, English and maths..... Week 2 rule setting, getting ready for placement, English and maths.... Employability skills Week 3 rule setting, getting ready for placement, English and maths, employability skills, vocational skills, Interview for placements Week 4 rule setting, phoning placements to apologise for absence or behaviour Etc, etc, etc – Many not ready for placement and need longer in classroom.

15 …Easy for us to get rid of them!! Students from troubled background Poor school or college experience Major Behavioural issues Have been excluded or left all other learning environments

Find out their individual skills and needs to enable engagement of learners? Few rules- less to break Provide information, let them make the decisions? Encourage collaboration and individual working? Pay attention to individual needs. This does help with attendance, engagement, behaviour, motivation and hopefully success? The incentive money also helps!! emskills.org.uk

Attendance is good!!! 95% Only lost one learner – one came for one day and we both agreed it was not for him Achievements – qualifications cycle maintenance, construction, employability customer services, maths and English, First Aid. Embedding Functional Skills – employability, customer services, classroom tasks Placements – cycle shop x 2, florist, hairdressers, retail, sign design, landscape gardening, construction. Thinking they are ready for work – when they are not... ◦ Not turning up to placements ◦ Behaviour at placements ◦ Travel to work placements Over estimating concentration levels ◦ Most need a break every hour or less Everything takes twice as long as we expected and planned for. 15 years old (16 in a few weeks) – 6 th week on programme. I had reservations about taking her on the course as worried about her behaviour from past 100% attendance 100% punctuality Behaviour – Good On track to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths, Level 2 customer services, Level 2 employability. Retail work placement in New Look that she got herself.. Already achieved First Aid qualification, and speaking and listening. Aim to help Amber find an Apprenticeship or job at end of course www.newbubbles.com 20

Can we take KS4 school groups? – Yes but it has to cover costs or be funded through other means Can we take EHE – Yes we now have 3 EHE learners. Based in Hoddesdon – However we can set up programme in other areas – if we have more than 10 on the programme. Shorter or longer programmes Be flexible to individual needs... emskills.org.uk
