Zurich, Switzerland Purchased 2,166 energy efficient computers = 127,114kg CO2 saved during its use Used energy efficiency & sustainable building materials criteria for 45,081 m2 covering contracts worth 175.1 Million EUR Purchased organic food worth 390,000 EUR = 5.6% of its total budget Kolding, Denmark - Changed nearly 100% of its purchasing policies to include environmental considerations. The overall procurement budget has been reduced by 10% SP in practice (GPP)

Tübingen Germany Unit: Housing Department cleaning products Approach: The city centralised the purchase of cleaning products & services and switched to new supplier with innovative cleaning products Savings: €30,000/year Amaroussion Greece Unit: Housing Department Approach: Joint procurement of recycled paper Saving: Cost of recycled paper decreased considerably to half the price of conventional one SP in practice (cost-efficiency)

Freiburg Germany Unit: Dept. for Schools and Education copy machines. No maintenance costs. Approach: 4-year leasing of A-class copy machines. No maintenance costs. 75 schools pay for number of copies only. Savings: 50% Energy Saving Performance contracting (ESPC) save energy & money Approach: Local governments save energy & money by securing private sector expertise & financing of energy-efficiency improvement projects through the savings these projects are guaranteed to produce. Good Practice: Berlin renovated its schools and swimming pools through ESPS without spending any public money. SP in practice (cost-efficiency)

Socially responsible procurement Zurich, Switzerland The integrated approach taken by the Canton of Zurich on sustainable construction for all public buildings includes: social criteria for timber and wood products (FSC certified, where possible) Barrier-free buildings Healthy buildings (good indoor air quality) Munich, Germany Regulation in place (since 2003) preventing the procurement of goods made by means of exploitative child labour (ILO Conventions), e.g. natural stones, textile products, wood

Barcelona, Spain The City announced that made savings of EUR 30.000 through purchasing socially responsible workwear for municipal gardeners Yorkshire and Humber, UK 15 local authorities in the region have cooperated to make a joint purchase of Fair Trade products to facilitate the supply of Fair Trade products in the region. Products purchased: hot and cold drinks, snacks, chocolate and other food stuff Socially responsible procurement

Italian school canteens Public authorities serve at least 3 million kg of organic Fair Trade bananas per year. In its Technical Specifications, Rome asked suppliers to supply one Fair Trade banana every week for each pupil National government, Austria For all events held relating to Austria’s EU Presidency (2006), the official caterer was required to provide the organising ministry with choice of: Fair Trade coffee, chocolate (cocoa), tea and orange juice Socially responsible procurement
