1 The Governor’s School @ Innovation Park A STEM Initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) City of Manassas Public Schools City of Manassas Park Public Schools Prince William County Public Schools in Collaboration with George Mason University

2  Are you in the tenth grade?  Are you taking or have you taken Algebra II/Trig?  Are you taking or have you taken at least two high school science courses?

3  Are you passionate about ◦ Science? ◦ Technology? ◦ Engineering? ◦ Mathematics?  Do you respond to academic challenge?  Are you fascinated by research?  Do you enjoy hands-on science?  Do you enjoy project-based learning?

4  Students are bused to George Mason University’s Prince William Campus from the closest high school.  Governor’s School classes begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 11:15 a.m.  Students are bused back to their base or specialty program school.  Students take two classes in the afternoon at their base or specialty program school.  Students take the bus home from their school.

5  You can take two courses in your base or specialty program high school in last block of the school day.  Courses might include language arts and social studies, but other courses could be considered to fulfill requirements for Advanced Studies Diploma.  Counselors at your high school will work with you to determine the appropriate course schedule that may include electives.

6  You will have opportunities to take Advanced Placement courses or to complete certain International Baccalaureate Programme or Cambridge Programme courses.  Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and Cambridge AICE Examinations are funded by Prince William County Public Schools.  You will have opportunities to use online learning to support completion of requirements for Advanced Studies Diploma (Virtual Virginia).

7  Your school counselor will work with you to incorporate electives into your schedule wherever possible.  You will return to school in time to participate in after school activities and sports.

12  RAI I (Junior Year) and RAI II (Senior Year)  Course develops fundamental engineering skills  Course fulfills the competencies of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Principles of Technology and Engineering  Course fulfills the CTE elective requirement for an advanced diploma  Two years of the course is equivalent to a course in physics

13  Students spend time on Tuesday and Thursday developing research projects in the mentorship component.  Projects may be developed at the George Mason Campus or with a business or industry mentor off campus.

14  The application process was developed with representation from each school division  The number of students from each school division is pre-established ◦ City of Manassas – 10 students ◦ City of Manassas Park – 5 students ◦ Prince William County – 60 students  Selection expectations were established by team with representation from each school division  The team for the selection of students is established by each school division

17  Students completing the program will be excellent candidates for college admission at highly selective schools.  Students may take higher level math and science coursework not in Prince William County Public Schools.  Students have hands-on experience to help them explore career options in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Students have opportunities to earn Dual Enrollment College Credits through George Mason University. Most of these credits will transfer to other four year colleges.
