3 School Hours The opening bell rings at 8:05 AM class officially begins at 8:10 AM and school ends at 2:40 PM According to district policy and state law student supervision is only provided 30 minutes before and after school. This includes school sponsored activities. Hours of Supervision 7:10 AM – 3:10 PM

4 Student Schedule Students will have a total of eight classes Seminole Middle School is on a Odd/Even block schedule of alternating days with four blocks taken each day ODD and EVEN ODD DAY - 1, 3, 5, 7 EVEN DAY - 2, 4, 6, 8 Each class or block is 86 minutes in length.

6 Academic Responsibility Students must pass all core courses Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts Student Grade Recovery Student Grade Remediation Grades Impact Electives Our Goal = INDEPENDENCE

7 Middle School Promotion To receive a passing grade a student must receive a total of 4 points in each subject for the year A year has 4 quarters, Example: 1 2 3 4 Student 1 D D D D = 4 pts. Student 2 F F F B = 3 pts.* Student 3 B B C B = 11 pts. *Student 2 fails as they did not reach the 4 point minimum. A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points D = 1 point F = 0 point

8 Transparent communication between parents and teachers about student progress Parents can monitor student’s grades throughout the quarter – not just at interims / report cards! Set email preferences for alerts and grade reports Know exactly what assignments / tasks your child is excelling or struggling on.

10 Testing and Assessment Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) Florida Assessment for Intervention in Reading (FAIR) Broward Standards Assessment (BSA) High School credit exams (EOC) Core Competencies Midterms Finals

11 Teaming A team consists of the five teachers for Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Reading Additional teachers are responsible for elective and enrichment non-core courses Teaming allows for conferences with all teachers

12 Reading Placement: GEM – 5 th grade GEM Placement Exam ADV – 5 th grade FSA Math level 4-5 and a “B” average or above. REGULAR MATH – 5 th grade FSA Math level 1-3. INTENSIVE MATH – All students with 5 th grade FSA Math level of 1-2; in addition to Regular Math. Students proficient in reading (FSA Levels 3, 4, 5) will be placed in Literature. Non-Proficient students (FSA Levels 1, 2) will be scheduled for reading everyday. MATH PLACEMENT:

13 DECAL Division of Enhanced Communication and Law  A challenging advanced academic program that leads to high school credit classes in 7 th and 8 th grade  All Applicants must score a level 4 or 5 on their FSA in both reading and math  Over one year of high school credit can be earned in middle school  A Gifted track for those students identified as gifted with Gifted Enrichment  A language, Spanish or American Sign Language Submit your application promptly. DECAL is a highly competitive program with a waiting list at each grade level due to class size restrictions.

15 Seminole Middle School 2016 – 2017 DECAL Process Application Process Applicants complete the DECAL Application Applications are reviewed by a guidance counselor and or an assistant principal Acceptance or Denial Letters will be sent to the parent/guardian DECAL Parent/Student Contract will be completed and returned to Seminole Parent/Guardian registers the student completing the course selection form Out of Boundary Students Parent/Guardian registers at school with reassignment letter of approval District re-assigned students will complete the DECAL application during the registration process at Seminole Parent/Guardian completes the course selection card during registration Application are reviewed by a guidance counselor and or assistant principal Acceptance or Denial Letter will be sent to the parent/guardian DECAL Parent/Student Contract will be completed and returned to Seminole Eligible students must have FSA Level of 4 or 5 in both Reading and Math SUBMIT APPLICATION FOR DECAL WITH REGISTRATION Friday, February 26, 2016

22 Re-Registration Process ALL incoming 6 th grade students must re-register for the new year. Complete the following: 1.Registration Form 2.Emergency Contact Form 3.Attach Document from Column A 4.Attach Document from Column B

23 Scheduling Process Fill out the course selection form completely You will be choosing ELECTIVES ONLY Number Elective choices 1 – 4 on the back of your form 1 will be “my first choice,” 2 “my second choice,” etc. Be sure you & your child sign the BACK of the card and return it to your Homeroom Teacher Course Selection Forms Due MARCH 1 st to your elementary guidance counselor or Seminole Middle
