7:15 – School Doors open. Students may report to cafeteria to eat breakfast or report directly to the gym. 7:35 – Bell rings to report to Homeroom class. 8:00 – Tardy bell: School starts. (Arrivals after 8:00 requires parent to sign student in.) 2:30 - Dismissal

All 5 th grade students will have 2 teachers. (1 teacher for Math/Science & 1 teacher for ELA/Social Studies). These 2 teachers and 2 others make up a team. We have 4 fifth grade teams. These “teams” share activity and lunch times. The Teams are: 5-1 : Hall/Odom, Fox/KParker 5-2 : Green/Goggan, DMann/Setzer 5-3 : Mitchell/Farris, Norton/Alexander 5-4 : Bennett/Vaughn, Nelson/TMann

Students will be supervised at all times by the teacher while changing classes, reporting to lunch, dismissal, etc. Students will be supervised at recess, bus duty, and car duty by YIS administration. 5 th graders do not have lockers. Cubbies are located in the classroom. All 5 th grade Homeroom classes are located on “B” Hall. Partner teachers are directly across the hallway.

Guidelines Expectations, and Information

School Rules All students are given a school handbook which is also used as their agenda. Please read this with your child. Dress Code is discussed in the student handbook. Anything that is disruptive is not allowed. Cell Phones are not recommended. No electronics.

LUNCHES

Regular lunch next year will be $2.05. A variety of items are sold each day. Choice of Entrees include Pizza, Chicken Nuggets, Hamburgers, Salads, Sub Sandwiches, Nachos, and the Hot meal on the menu. Students are served from 2 lines. Students will have assigned seating area. Students are given 20 minutes to eat lunch. Students are given 20 minutes for recess each day. 5 minutes of lunch is always Silent Lunch.

Students from YIS and YSD 1 elementary schools ride together. Most students will ride the same bus as they did as a 4 th grade student. The time of morning pickup and afternoon drop off should be close to the same time as last year. (A few exceptions may apply). Appropriate conduct on buses must be displayed at all times. All buses are equipped with camera surveillance.

Car Riders Car riders are dropped off at the front of school. All students should be dropped off in the right hand lane along the sidewalk. Once you drop off you may exit using the left hand lane. (Please pull forward to the blue cone so that we are utilizing the entire front walk so that traffic does not back up to the highway.) All car riders are to wait in the afternoon on the sidewalk or designated area.

Parents picking up car riders can double stack in the afternoon. Please utilize the entire area along the sidewalk. Leave a small opening at the crosswalk.

Merit Program At YIS, Merit is not a pull-out program. Each of the 5 th grade teams include one Merit Class. All Merit teachers have received their endorsement and certification to teach Merit.

EXPLORATORY CLASSES All Exploratory Classes are 50 minutes. Students attend one exploratory classes every day. PE/Health – 9 weeks Music – Choral/Instrumental – 4 ½ weeks Art – 4 ½ weeks Keyboarding – 4 ½ weeks Study Island – 4 ½ weeks Math Enrichment – 4 1/2 -weeks Resource – All Year

S.C. Curriculum Standards All of our Core Academic classes teach Common Core State Standards.

Assessment MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Students are assessed in Reading and Math three times during the school year. (Fall, Winter, Spring) Computer Assessment relevant to Common Core Standards. MAP measures student growth/weaknesses in specific reading and math skills. Science and Social Studies teachers develop a cumulative 9-weeks assessment. PASS Testing Spring 2014 – Writing, Reading, Math, Science or SS. (Last year of PASS) Beginning 2015 students will take Standardized test based on Common Core State Standards.

Parents are encouraged to participate on our PTO or SIC. If a parent would like to volunteer please contact the school. Parents are encouraged to eat lunch with their child at anytime. Please stay in touch with your child’s teacher throughout the school year. Utilize Parent Portal and School Web Page. PTO/SIC

YSD1 Annual Registration All parents/guardians must provide proof of residence before the first day of school in August. Registration begins May 13 th.
