1 in 10 Australians are affected by asthma. That's over 2 million people. 37,700 Hospitalisations for asthma in 2013-14. That’s a rate of 165 per 100,000 population 389 Deaths due to asthma in 2013. What is Asthma? AsthmaAsthma is a long-term condition that affects a person's breathing. It is a significant cause of ill health and poor quality of life. People with asthma experience episodes of: wheezing shortness of breath coughing chest tightness due to widespread narrowing of the airways. The symptoms of asthma vary over time and may be present or absent at any point in time. Asthma affects people of all ages and has a substantial impact on the community.
