The Ultimate Goal  Within the next 2 weeks you and your group, guided by your editors, will produce an Ancient Egyptian Newspaper that reports from the time period of the ancient leader you have chosen.  To complete this task you will use:  the research you collect from this moment forward  the knowledge you acquired during your Egyptian studies with Mr. Woletz  Sample newspapers from previous classes on display in the classroom  The cooperative efforts of your newspaper staff

Day 1-Tasks  Your first task is to begin to gather the facts by completing the PERSIAN packet you received from your teacher.PERSIAN  You may work with your group or independently to identify facts for each category in your PERSIAN packet. At any time you may go to the sites that give you the info you need by using the links attached to this picture. They are also at the end of this Powerpoint.

What is a PERSIAN Packet?  P olitics, the military & government  E conomy, trade, & natural resources  R eligion & monumental structures  S ocial classes & gender/family roles  I nventions & technology  A rts, architecture, music, & writing  N atural environment & climate Every culture forms around a set of principles. As you compare one culture to the next, you need a standard note taking system to identify the key principles that formed that cultured. PERSIAN is the acronym used to guide you through your research.

Day 1 As you begin your PERSIAN note taking:  put on your head set  click the pyramid picture  Watch this National Geographic video about the Ancient Pyramids  Re-acquaint yourself with Ancient Egypt

Day 1: Continue your PERSIAN Research Task:  By the end of class on Day 1, you should have at least 4 facts in each section of the PERSIAN packet.  The facts can be anything, as long as they apply to a category listed in your PERSIAN packet:  a list of crops, recipes, animals (domestic, wild, hunted)  When a pharaoh ruled  Jobs, entertainment or trades  Weapons, battles, military ranks  Cities, enemies, athletic competitions  Anything else you find interesting and informative…

Day 2: Continue Research  Target Goal: Who do you want to be your Pharaoh?  As a group you need to review the Egyptian Leaders and choose your pharaoh.  You might decide to choose a time when leadership goes from one pharaoh, king or queen to the next  Choosing your leader determines your general time period which defines: technology, enemies, religion, trade, monuments, etc…  Click on the artifact below to see a list of rulers who you might decide interest your group. There are many other rulers who are less famous, and you may look them up as well.

Day 3: Newspaper Project Target Goal:  Select Editors, decide on theme of newspaper & Continue Research  Select your Writing Editor & your Layout Editor  Writing Editor will review each members article and will be the final say on the topic members must cover. They will designate someone to report to the teacher at the end of each class period.  The Layout Editor will format the pages and give directions about how the newspaper looks. They will be the final say on font, columns, title, pictures and graphics.  You may decide to have a regular paper or focus on a theme (i.e. business, sports, fashion, entertainment, etc.) You need to decide that as a group.

Day 4: What is the scoop?  Each group will have several pages in their newspaper. Consider each person doing their own page.  On each page there needs to be an ARTICLE related to that section of the newspaper  No dead space on the pages. The page might be filled with ads, comics, pictures, announcements, short article pieces. Stick with the theme of your page.

Well Written News Article STRUCTURE for main article: Opening- title, lead, city reporting from 3 paragraphs at least:  Paragraph 1= In the first one or two sentences tell the who, what, where, when, why. Try to hook the reader by beginning with a funny, clever, or surprising statement. How about beginning with a question?  Paragraph 2= In the second paragraph give the reader the details. Include one or two quotes from people you interviewed. Write in 3 rd person (he, she, it they). Be objective- never state your opinion. Use quotes to express other people’s opinions.  Paragraph 3= Wrap it up, don’t leave the reader hanging. Try to end with a quote or catchy phrase.  Tips- use active words, have someone pretend they are involved in the event you are writing about and ask them what to answer your questions as though they are in character, tell the MOST interesting facts first. Remember the best reporters are rewarded with articles published “ABOVE the FOLD.”

Graded article has a set format… Article title Article sub title or lead The city the reporter is reporting from Picture, map of the event Description below picture Columns are justified

Eye catching suggestions: Do you want to include the author near your article? What about a date on each page? Several pictures related to one article Maybe your lead is a quote you pulled from your article but made bigger font to stand out Is their a theme to your page?

Front page… Need a newspaper name Need a date Need an index to tell where the articles are buried in your paper Index can include author’s name or just direct to page number

What every Egyptian Reporter needed know: Each member of your group will need to report on an event that occurred at the time your newspaper was written. To be able to do this you might want to decide on and select an area in which you would like to be an expert.
