Notes Set 2

The darkness or lightness of a color. Value

These values are shown on a value scale. A value scale shows a gradual change from the lightest to darkest value.

Shape - a two dimensional area that is defined in some way.

Shapes are divided into two groups- Geometric shapes which are definite shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, etc. They are shapes that follow the rules of geometry.

Shapes are divided into two groups- Organic shapes which are shapes like you would find in nature.

A Form is an object that has three dimensions.

By adding value to a shape we give it the appearance of a form.

Now for the project……………………………….

Step 1- Trace a pair of scissors on a piece of paper. They should be open and the entire pair should fit on the paper. Then trace the scissors three more times. For these three, the whole pair doesn’t have to show. They should be “peeking in” from the edge. Think about how you are laying them out so that you have an interesting composition. Step 2- Divide the paper by drawing 5 straight lines from left to right and 6 lines from top to bottom. These lines should be crooked. They should not cross another line that is heading in the same direction. Step 3- Add value to the different sections. Only shade one section at a time. Gradually go from dark to light in each section. Be sure there is contrast between the sections where they touch. Do not outline the scissors or the lines you drew over them. Let the contrast between dark and light define the shape of the scissors and the extra lines. !!!Be sure to GRADUALLY change from dark to light. It should not look striped. There should be a wide range of values in each section!!!
