Kell High School 2015-2016
6
Kell will move to a modified hybrid block schedule. o Most students will meet daily in four, 90-minute classes that meet every day for a semester; at the end of the semester, students earn a full year of credit. o Some classes, such as AP and upper level performing arts classes are on a hybrid schedule. These classes meet all year on an alternating A and B Day schedule.
7
This will allow students to take a minimum of 8 classes each year which totals a minimum of 32 credits over 4 years. Most students will now be able to earn more credits in an area of interest and/or have more opportunities to take additional classes that may not have had the opportunity to take on a traditional schedule.
8
NOTES: YL = Year Long courses meet for 90 minutes every other day for the entire school year on either A day or B Day Y = Year courses will meet every day for 90 minutes for the semester (A & B days) .5 = There will be some Half a semester courses that meet for 45 days of the semester and part of a required pair (Ex. U.S. Government / Economics OR Health / Personal Fitness) Please keep in mind that many A/B courses come with a pre- determined “pairing.” For example, if you sign up for Honors Spanish IV, you will automatically have AP Spanish V paired with it as well. Other A/B “pairings” offer options, so please be mindful of what those options are.
9
As you and your student think about the elective classes that he or she wishes to take next year, please be aware that some courses have prerequisites and some courses are sequential. o Example (prerequisite): Spanish II has a prerequisite of a 70% or better in Spanish I. o Example (sequential): You can’t take Culinary Arts 2 if you haven’t taken Intro to Culinary Arts and Culinary Arts 1. It should be self evident that students need to pass a class in order to be eligible for the next class in the sequence, and by passing the class students meet the prerequisite.
10
Students register for the ENTIRE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR at one time during the March registration period. Every effort will be made to accommodate student selections indicated; however, the following factors may affect a student’s final schedule: o Insufficient number of students requesting the course, and therefore the course cannot be scheduled. o Selecting 2 courses that are taught during the same class time period. o Choosing a course and your student’s final grade does not meet the prerequisite for the course.
11
We do not honor teacher-preference requests. All 1600 students have preferences, and it would be impossible to honor all requests.

1. Students will select 4 primary elective courses from those listed on the practice sheet. 2. Students will also select a minimum of 2 alternate elective courses from the practice sheet. Students are allowed a maximum of one PE course per semester Please be sure your student chooses alternate electives wisely as it is very likely one or more will end up on your student’s schedule. 3. Remember to look at the prerequisites required for electives. Do not choose an elective for which your student has not met the prerequisite. 4. If your student registers for an elective where he or she does not meet the prerequisite, administration will choose your student’s elective for him or her.
15
Students who receive even one of their elective choices (even if it’s an alternate elective choice) will not be eligible to request a change for a different elective next year.
