1 Challenges Facing Africa Today

2 While many countries in Africa have been successful in achieving independence and equal human rights since the end of colonialism, the struggle was and is costly.

3 AIDS is a disease caused by the HIV virus which started in 1959 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Not all HIV positive people will develop AIDS 2/3 of all AIDS cases are found in Africa. AIDS kills more people in Africa than any other disease, including Malaria. With fewer Africans to work, economies have suffered as have family structures. Uganda is successfully leading the continent in AIDS awareness and education to reduce the number of cases. AIDS

5 SOMALIA Civil War in Somalia left a country in anarchy and no true leadership. In addition, drought and famine led to further devastation of this country. International aid was prevented from reaching citizens by guerilla warriors who intercepted it for their own purposes.
