MSIG’s Mission This organization has been formed to address issues and concerns within the industrial and environmental health profession that uniquely affect individuals classified as minorities within the United States population, as well as those issues and concerns that affect disadvantaged and low income workers and other members of the community. A further purpose is to stimulate a dialogue, develop strategies, and to execute a plan to resolve such issues and concerns. 2

Current Position: Safety and Industrial Hygiene Consultant at WestRock. What Industry do you work in? Pulp and Paper Industry What do you like most about being an Industrial Hygienist? I can influence decisions that are made to protect the health and well-being of the workforce. What are the benefits of the AIHA MSIG Membership? Serving as the MSIG Chair has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and broaden my networking capabilities.

LaToya McKelvey, MS 6 Current Position: Industrial Hygiene Consultant at JK, Inc. (full- service industrial hygiene and indoor air quality consulting company) IH Experience: Performed assessments in various facilities for environmental issues involving indoor air quality and microbial agents in healthcare, office buildings and school settings as well as noise and industrial hygiene surveys including representative OSHA compliance monitoring for chemical and physical hazards in chemical plants, manufacturing facilities, and oil and gas fields. What do you like most about being an Industrial Hygienist? I love science and being an IH gives me the opportunity to apply many science disciplines (i.e. biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) on the job. Being an consultant allows me to see behind the scenes of many industries as well as interact with a variety of people.

Being part of the body of knowledge that understands specifically what the challenges of being a minority in the profession and the professional development resources within the group that help in your growth. 7

Valerie Murray, MPH, CIH 8 Education: BS in Chemistry, Texas A&M University, MPH in Occupational and Environmental Health with a concentration in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Texas - Health Science Center - School of Public Health Current Position: Health & Industrial Hygiene Manager for BP America’s Gulf of Mexico Region in Houston, Texas. What Industry do you work in? Upstream Oil & Gas Industry What do you like most about being an Industrial Hygienist? For me, I enjoy the fieldwork and the time I spend with the workforce listening and understanding their IH and HSE concerns. I also enjoy that no day is exactly the same, IH and HSE issues arise, whether they are new/emerging or historical/old, it is fun to think of systematic and innovative ways to address them, whether it be simplifying a process/procedure, implementing new controls, or completing an exposure assessment. What are the benefits of the AIHA MSIG Membership? Being a member of MSIG has allowed me to expand my IH and HSE network and interact with other professionals sharing a common interest on HSE issues related to ethnic minority and disadvantaged individuals. I have also had the opportunity to improve/build on my leadership and collaboration skills by being an active member of MSIG.

Academia What do you like best about teaching OSH courses? Working with students and the community to promote the profession of occupational safety and health. What Industry do you work in? Chemical Manufacturing What do you like most about being an Industrial Hygienist? I can make a change one survey/assessment at a time. What are the benefits of the AIHA MSIG Membership? You meet people from different cultural backgrounds to understand what is happening in the world. 10
