2. Friend Making Tips Introduce yourself with a “firm” handshake and smile. – “Nice to meet you. My name is Chun Sam.” Remember you do not need to bow or show respect to people older than you in western culture. There is only a hanbok in Korea! Try to keep eye contact and open body language when you speak to your new friend.

4. Bad Conversation Topics Salary - how much do you make? Politics - wait to you get to know the person better Boyfriend/Girlfriend Religion – What religion are you? Age- How old are you? Martial status- Are you married? When will you get married? Why are you not married? Stereotypes ( 고정관념 )- Can you use chopsticks? Do you like spicy food? Appearance- ‘You have a small face/ high nose’

5. Practice with a friend- one on one Pretend your friend is from a different country and introduce yourself to them. – Firm handshake – Smile – Use open body language – Ask who, what, when, where, why, how questions End the conversation- ‘I enjoyed talking to you but I must be going now.’ (shake hands again) Try keeping the conversation going as long as you can!

6. Approaching a group of people Get in groups of 4. Pretend one of you is interested in approaching the group for the first time. ‘Excuse me (smile). Do you mind if I sit with you?’ Introduce yourself and shake hands with everyone at the table one by one. ‘Hi my name is _____. Nice to meet you. What is your name?’ Tip: Try to remember everyone’s name Ask people at the table who, what, when, where, why questions. People at the table should ask the new person questions as well. When you are ready to leave- (smile and shake hands with everyone). ‘Excuse me. I have to go but it was nice meeting all of you.’

8. When to use the word “foreign”? This word means “not belong” and has a negative feeling to it. Example- There is a foreign object in my ear. The x-ray shows a foreign object inserted in the stomach.

9. Common Mistakes “Foreigner” is a word that describes someone who does not belong. Calling someone a foreigner can make people feel bad.

10. Remember that we are all the same. Instead of using the word foreigner you can just say man, woman, kid or person, French woman, Brazilian man. Set an example for others and help correct your friends too!

(This is not an interview/do not tell anyone this is “homework”) Take a group picture (or videos) with your new friends and talk about your experience in a presentation (3 minutes per student) for class. (No PowerPoint text) Do not use the word foreigner in your speech. Every student must make different friends- we should be seeing pictures of different people. Do not attend with your friends from this class! Turn in a one paragraph paper (using the correct format) talking about your experience at the meetup and include pictures.
