Algebra I Unit 2 Lessson 2

Do Now  Are my answers correct?  If not what mistake do you think I made and why?

Objective  SWBAT set up and solve multi-step equations including problem situations  SWBAT set up and solve equations with variables on both sides of the equation

What Do These 3 Picture Have in Common?

Distributive Property  The Distributive Property says that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately Example: 3(2 + 4) = 3×2 + 3×4 So the "3" can be "distributed" across the "2+4" into 3 times 2 and 3 times 4.

INM-Distributive Property  4(3x + 8)  2 + 5 (6x + 3y)  7x + 2(5x +3)

Plus/Minus Vs. Positive/Negative  PLUS and MINUSES are used in sentences or when reading equations and expressions. POSITIVES and NEGATIVES are like defining the individual words that make up the sentence.  FOR EXAMPLE: 3 – 4 (2x – 7)  In this example the sentence reads 3 minus 4 times 2x minus 7.  When distributing we look at individual words.  We must look at the preceding sign not as adding or subtraction but as positive or negative until they are placed back in a sentence.  To distribute we must multiply negative 4 times positive 2x, then negative 4 times negative 7. When placed back in a sentence it yields:  3 minus 8x plus 14 OR 3 - 8x + 14

Solving Equations using the Distributive Property

Special Case: Solve! 4x – (3x +2)

Independent Practice Distributive Property

Diffusion Equilibrium  In science we often talk about the term Diffusion Equilibrium  Diffusion Equilibrium is the state in which the concentrations of the diffusing substance in the two compartments are the same or become equal.concentrationssubstance  Solving multi-step equations are very similar to the process of diffusion equilibrium.

 How many ways do you think we can solve for x?  Justify your answer. 6x + 4 = 14x – 28 Are there really two (or more) sides to a story?

10x + 15 = 5 x + 25 Variables Constants The Logistics of Algebra

Guided Practice Multi-Step Equations

6n + 17 = 5 + 4n

5(x – 6) = 2x – 18 + 2x

3(w + 7) – 5w = w + 12

-3(2 –3x) = –6x – 2(x –3)

Independent Practice Multi-Step Equations
