FESS/Ops Shut Down Summary Week Ending 9/7/12

– FESS needs a CUB Cooling Outage for installation of Barriers in the CUB Chiller 4160 Volt Starter Cabinet. This will allow replacement of 4160 X 120 Volt Transformers without shutting down the entire 4160 Cabinet, Chillers and Experiments. To accomplish this, FESS must take down the 4160 Volt Cabinet and all Chillers, – A CUB cooling outage affects Wilson Hall, XG/LinAcc/Footprint Area, MI60, and MI65.

CUB Chiller #1 4160 X120 Transformer Replacement requires shutdown of 4160 Bus, currently can only be accomplished by shutting down 4160 Cabinet, shut off all CUB chillers. Proposed installation of Bus Barriers would enable change out of Individual Transformers without shutting down all Chillers. Requires two accesses, one to measure for barriers, one for installation

– Option 1. Coordinate CUB Cooling Outage with the Annual Wilson Hall (FDR 44) Power Outage for Electrical Maintenance Wilson Hall would be without Power (Except for Emergency Generator Loads) and without Primary Cooling – 8 th Floor would have Emergency Power but no Cooling (Spot coolers have not been Provided in Past, looking into feasibility of deployment – 5 th Floor would have no Emergency Power or Cooling (Power and Spot Coolers have not been provided in Past) The XG/LinAcc/Footprint Area, MI60, and MI65 will be without Primary Cooling. The Ctrl. Room/XG Computer Room/Mac Computer Room and XG Firus Room will be provided Spot Coolers The WH Comm. Center and Telecomm. Switch Rooms will be provided Cooling from Emergency Generators and Spot Coolers

The 90 ton Chiller is Not on WH Emergency Power – 90 Ton Chiller does not now and has never been available for Cooling the Computer Room Floors during a Wilson Hall Power Outage. – We have not been able to provide Cooling for the 8th floor in the Past during a WH (FDR 44) Power Outage, only during a CUB cooling Outage. – (To provide Cooling for the 8 th Floor during a WH Power Outage, the 90 Ton Chiller, (Replacement or Rental Unit) along with the associated Pumps and Controls must be tied into WH Emergency Power, FESS Electrical Eng. would need to evaluate).

Action Items – WH 8 th Floor- Deploy 2 ea. 5 Ton Spot coolers – XG Computer room- Deploy 30 Ton Rental AC Unit – Ctrl. Room/Mac Computer Room and XG Firus Room provide Spot Coolers – WH Comm. Center and Telecomm. Switch Rooms provide Cooling Emergency Generators and Spot Coolers

Action Items, cont. Evaluate Load Requirements, Repair, Replace WH 90 ton Chiller Evaluate 90 ton Chiller, Pumps and Controls for connection to WH Emergency Power

Mechanical (Cont.) – Computer Room HVAC issue Reheat Coil #1 Isolated above XG computer room, – Potential for leakage Reheat Coil #3 Active above XG Computer room – Potential for leakage

XG Computer Room Reheat Coils

FESS/Ops, after having re-forged these “Swords of Damocles” into Anduril, Flame of the West,

FESS/OPs

will safely sheath the Sword in the Stone

Reheat Coil #1 and #3 Mitigated

Mechanical (Cont.) XG Operators Room (Light Side) Reheat Coil #5 supplies 2 Registers to Operators Room and Abandoned ductwork above XG Computer Room, (at least 1 supply uncapped and open above dropped ceiling) RHC5 is currently held closed by having main air applied directly to the valve RHC5 could be re-enabled through installation of a pneumatic Thermostat locate in the Operators Room Since the Trunk line from AC2 is mostly blanked off above the Computer Room Ceiling, a solution to the Operators Area would be a re-route of this ductwork. With Assistance from FESS, this last Sword would then be Beaten into a Plowshare

Reheat coil # 5 Repurposed

Ponds extending clockwise from B2 to E3 are directly or indirectly attached to Main Ring Lake because of the deteriorated condition of the berm that formally separated them from the lake. They will become permanent extensions of the lake.

Ponds extending clockwise from E3 to F3 will be retained as a remnant pond system. Modifications to both the LCW system and the ponds are being planned (Maurice Ball) or will be planned to save energy costs, and eventually to accommodate the F0 cryo plant cooling loads serving the Muon Campus programs

Ponds extending clockwise from F3 to A1 will not be modified, and may be needed to serve as large heat sinks providing cooling for the minimal loads at A0. Ponds extending clockwise from A1 to B2 will be drained and eventually become drainage swales. This will require excavation at the end of the few dams/weirs that still remain in-tact.

Maintenance of the sump systems in the tunnel needs to be continued as required to keep the overall area dry. Repairs or replacements may be prioritized based on the consequences of the failure, particularly when adjacent pumps continue to manage the water. Pond pumps and heat exchangers between B1 and E2 can be abandoned, and maintenance discontinued.
