How do they work? Fine Art GCSE (Single Art) If you have only one option available and you would like to take Art at GCSE then this is the option for you! Art & Design GCSE (Double Art) This choice gives you twice the Art fun! This course is most suitable for those students thinking that they might want to pursue art and design perhaps as a career or continue onto A’Level It is the equivalent of two fantastic GCSE courses in Fine Art and Art & Design added together (Fine Art GCSE+ Art & Design GCSE = Double Art) Resulting in two discreet qualifications at GCSE level.
12

What’s the bonus of taking the double option? 2 Grades in GCSE Art at the end of the course. A broad and exciting folio of work offering opportunities to experience more media and techniques than you can explore in 5 lessons a fortnight. Creatively it closes no doors- this is the foundation which could allow you to pursue any artistic aspiration; photographer, set designer, costume designer, interior decorator, ceramicist, sculptor, painter, Art historian, product designer, Art therapist, graphic designer..... The list goes on and on and...
14
“I hear art is A LOT of work, will I cope?” Like anything worth having, you have to expect to work hard to succeed. When you are doing something that you love then it doesn’t feel like hard work. When you get into what you are doing sometimes you just don’t want to stop working on it until you’ve got it how you want it? Success is based on good organisation, self motivation and determination.
15
What am I waiting for? A very good question.... Choosing to take Art at GCSE you will have the opportunity to work with teachers who are passionate about their subject and have either worked in the past or continue to work as professional artists and or designers. The teachers are your examiners and with years of experience under their belts they will be able to give you very specific guidance and feedback to help you realise your full potential.
16

Things you know you shouldn’t say to an Art teacher…. “It’s an easy option just to sit around and paint a bit, after all anything can be called Art these days” “Its not a proper subject, I mean you’re not going to get a job with Art are you?” “Except for being a professional Artist or an Art teacher are there any other jobs that you can do with Art?”

The Importance of the Creative Industries ‘world exports of visual arts more than doubled from £10.3 billion’ The creative and cultural industries are increasingly recognised as not only being a "defining feature of the British national identity" and vital component of our quality of life, but also as vital to the health of the UK economy, representing 8% of our GDP. "It is a sector that has experienced rapid growth throughout the world in the last decade. The contribution of our creative economy to overall gross domestic product is the highest across all OECD countries." Will Hutton, Work Foundation
22
The creative economy comprises advertising, architecture, art, crafts, design, fashion, film, music, performing arts, publishing, R&D, software, toys and games, TV and radio, and video games (Howkins 2001) The creative industries have been seen to become increasingly important to economic well-being, proponents suggesting that; "human creativity is the ultimate economic resource," (Florida 2002) “the industries of the twenty-first century will depend increasingly on the generation of knowledge through creativity and innovation," (Landry & Bianchini 1995).
