Leadership Binder Creation and Organization
2
Leadership Binders Before we get started with organizing the binder, there are just a few things to clear up. 1)Students should not be tracking the school wide goals. Those goals are for the teachers. The students should be aware of these goals, and their goals should help the school reach the school wide goals, but they should not track them. Countless studies have shown that people are most successful with only a few goals at time. Also, developmentally many students are unable to grasp the idea of a school wide goal. 2)Goals should be set around the end of the first quarter. The first quarter should be about class introductions and community building. This gives the teacher and student some time to get to know each other, understand the student’s strengths and weaknesses, and set baseline data. You should also take some time to look through the previous year’s goals to reflect and create stronger goals for this year.
3
Leadership Binders 3)Binders should stay at school. Their leadership binders should stay at school to ensure they have them during every day. This way, the binders are something that they can present to their parents at conferences, otherwise the parents already know what is inside. 4)Teachers must select options for WIGs for students to choose. We are teaching students to create measurable, time bound, objectively measured goals. They definitely won’t do this by default. A goal of, “I want to get better at listening,” is a goal not worth writing down. The goal must be able to be measured objectively with data. 5)Binders should be kept and passed on from grade to grade. Students will not have to set up their binders the first days of school each year. They should simply add the new WIGs, update their personal mission statement if needed, and add their leadership job papers and victories throughout the year. By 5 th grade, they should be able to participate in even deeper reflection of goal tracking by reflecting upon all their goals throughout their years.

They should have about two WIGs that are created upon baseline data, have an easy objective way to measure, and are time bound.

Goals should be ones that can be tracked at least once per week.
