WELCOME TO THE LIBRARY Librarian – Ms. Jennifer Zinn

ABOUT MS. ZINN Taught junior high & high school speech, yearbook, and English classes for 11 years. Graduated with Master’s degree in Library Science in May 2011. Moved from Canyon, TX to San Antonio in August.

MORE ABOUT MS. ZINN I like to read – favorite authors are JK Rowling, Mitch Albom, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Lee Child, Sue Grafton, and Janet Evanovich. I play the clarinet in a community band. I love to ride roller coasters – have ridden 161 different roller coasters.

ABOUT THE LIBRARY Open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. – unless Ms. Zinn is at a meeting. You must always sign in when you come to the library unless you are with a class. Must have pass from teacher during the day. Don’t expect to check out a book between classes. Will not write a pass!

LIBRARY PROCEDURES Leave backpacks at the front of the library. Take care of books – handle them gently. If you’re not sure where you got a book – don’t put it back in the shelf, leave it on top. Use quiet voices and appropriate language. Sit with chair flat on floor.

LIBRARY ORGANIZATION Library has over 9200 items. Collection consists of Fiction, Non- Fiction, and Reference materials. 33 magazines subscriptions.

FICTION Fiction books are made up though some can be based on real historic events or be written as realistic fiction. Most of the fiction books are located on the outside shelves. They are organized by the author’s last name.

NON-FICTION Non-fiction books are based in truth and are often used for information. Most non-fiction books are categorized using the Dewey Decimal System.

DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM A method for organizing books based on subjects. Though mostly non-fiction, some fiction books can be found under the Dewey Decimal classification.

MAGAZINES 33 magazines – current issues on shelf at front of library. Back issues past the dictionaries in reference. Can check out 1 magazine a week. Lost magazines cost $4.00 to replace.

CHECK-OUT PROCEDURES Need to know your student ID number – say slow and clear. Can check out up to three items for two weeks at a time. Cannot check out items if you have overdue books. Can renew books if nobody else has requested them. No fines for late books, but you do have to pay for books you damage or lose.

COMPUTERS Computer lab is used by classes for research, testing, or class assignments. Before or after school, you can only use computers for research or class assignments with a note from your teacher. You cannot listen to music, play unapproved games, or go to inappropriate websites. Violation of this will result in loss of computer privileges. Printing is for class assignments only – ask before printing.

B.O.N.E.S. READING PROGRAM Get a reading log. Read at least 8 books. (No easy fiction) Have parents sign the form for each book you read. Turn in form by November 11 Pick a book to add to the library collection. You’ll promote the book with poster, video, or audio.

SCAVENGER HUNT Questions 1 & 2 – must find the book on the shelf. Carefully replace where you found it when finished. Question 3 – Use the card catalog to search an author. Be sure to note if there is more than one page of search results when counting. Don’t count non-books or those written about the author but not BY the author – such as a biography. (Do count autobiographies and books that the author contributed to.) Question 4 – Use the reference book indicated. Check the table of contents or index to find information. Question 5 – There are multiple correct answers for this question – but the answer must be a magazine that we have in this library.
