Managing biodiversity involves work from several players. They can operate at a range of scales. Many local players are more involved because they depend on biodiversity for their well-being. Give an example? Some argue that the largest players wield the greatest power. Some are committed to conservation and others to exploiting resources. Conflicts are inevitable.

Ecosystem Management Scientists and researchers On your mind map template, add ‘players’ who have an interest in ecosystem management, think Local and Global! International organisations Individuals Transnational and private enterprise Consumer, and special interest groups Local communities e.g. indigenous people, farmers NGOS Artists and Poets Local and regional governments National governments operating an global and international levels

How does a treaty work? The 3 most influential international treaties in effect today but agreed before the convention on Biological Diversity was established in 1992 are as follows: Ramsar convention to conserve wetlands 1971 now adopted by 147 countries. World Heritage convention designed to protect outstanding sites 1972 adopted by 180 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) 1973 adopted by 166 countries, controls trade in range of species

Transnational corporations operate at a global scale. They can determine the production of goods and services e.g. whether in a sustainable way. Green strategies are becoming more popular. Many are investing in renewable energy projects. Many ecosystems suffer as they drive innovation and technology…even transferring technology. UN, World Bank, World Trade Organisation and ITTO (International Tropical Timber organisation) a cartel of producers and consumers developing forest conservation.

Aim is to stop degradation and conserve biodiversity.

They establish and enforce laws to conserve genetic biodiversity. -Manage natural resources -Fund preservation/ conservation and development usually from taxes - Positive incentives are often put in place

Why is the involvement of local people essential for good and sustainable management?

WALT To understand who the key players are Success Criteria A – Examine the relationship the players have on local and global scale C – Describe and explain how the key players work together Activate: Individual influences… Ethical consumerism has led to people choosing to buy environmentally friendly products e.g. dolphin friendly tuna. Spiritual and recreational demands for new tourist destinations means areas like the Galapagos and Arctic are experiencing mass tourism.
