Computer Components

● Many people believe that knowing how to use a computer is one of the basic skills needed to succeed in the workplace. ● In order to use the computer it is necessary to understand how the computer works. Basic Skills…

Know How to Use Technology Properly

Basic Functions of a Computer Processing InputOutput Storage (Memory)

Input Devices Allow you to enter data into the computer Keyboard (most common) Mouse Voice recognition devices Scanner Digital camera Touch Screen

Output Devices Ability to read/see/use what the computer is doing Monitor CRT LCD Printer Dot Matrix Ink Jet Laser Jet Speakers Headphones

Connecting Peripheral Device: A piece of hardware outside the main computer Keyboard Printer Scanner Port: The pathway for data to go into and out of the computer from the peripheral devices Device Driver: Software that will allow the computer to communicate with a peripheral device

Processing Processing The Central Processing Unit ( CPU): Often referred to as the “brain” of the computer. Responsible for controlling all activities of the computer system. Motherboard: The place where most of the electronics including the CPU are mounted. Primary storage or memory: Is where the data and program that are currently in operation or being accessed are stored during use. Two types: RAM (non-permanent) ROM (permanent)

Storage Common storage devices are: Hard Drive CD / DVD CDR – Compact disc recordable CDRW – Compact disc rewriteable USB Drives (aka: Jump Drive, Flash Drive, Thumb Drive) Memory Cards (digital cameras) Past storage devices: Punched paper tape/ cards Floppy disk Zip disk

Storage Cont’d. Capacity - The amount of information that can be stored on the device UnitDescriptionApproximate Size 1 bit1 binary digit 1 byte8 bits1 character 1 kilobyte1,024 bytes  1/2 page, double spaced 1 megabyte1,048,576 bytes  500,000 pages (1 million bytes) 1 gigabyte1,073,741,824 bytes  5 million pages (1 billion bytes) 1 terabyte1 trillion bytes  5 billion pages

Moving Information Within the Computer Bits are passed in parallel from place to place. Ribbon cables: Consist of several wires, molded together. One wire for each bit of the word or byte. Additional wires coordinate the activity of moving information. Each wire sends information in the form of a voltage pulse.

Moving Information Within the Computer Example of sending the word WOW over the ribbon cable Voltage pulses corresponding to the ASCII codes would pass through the cable.

Categories of Computers Super Computers Mainframe Computers Minicomputers Microcomputer Palmtop Computer Calculator Fast Expensive Complex Large Slow Cheap Simple Small

Software System Software – your computer is controlled by the system software Windows XP Vista Windows 7 OS X Application Software – programs that are designed to preform a basic function Word processing Database Spreadsheet Desktop publishing Photo editing Games

The Many Sounds of Windows 7
