2 What is in tobacco smoke? Tobacco has more than 3,000 chemicals. At least 43 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer. Cancer is a serious disease caused by the uncontrolled growth of cells. There are also many other substances in tobacco. Nicotine: a stimulant drug that speeds up the heartbeat. It also causes addiction. Tar: thick, dark liquid formed when tobacco burns. Coats inside of the lungs. Carbon monoxide: poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns.

5 Why people don’t use tobacco Causes cancer, disease, and heart attacks Breath, clothes, and hair smells bad Hard to stop once you start (addiction) Yellow teeth Skin gets wrinkled Harms others (second hand smoke) Illegal for minors

6 Why people don’t use marijuana Bad for your health Interferes with your ability to think clearly and communicate Slows you down (reaction time, bad for driving) Become dependent Can harm your reproductive health Doesn’t solve your problems (depression or anxiety). As the marijuana wears off, your back to your problems. Illegal Can make you feel paranoid

7 Chewing tobacco Contains nicotine and can become addicted just as easy as cigarettes. Some risks it may cause are: Bad breath Stained teeth Cancer- mouth, gums, larynx (voice box), and esophagus Can cause white spots on the gums and on the inside of the cheeks. These white spots can eventually become cancerous.

8 Secondhand smoke Secondhand smoke is tobacco smoke in the air that is inhaled by nonsmokers. Nonsmokers who breathe secondhand smoke are likely to develop some of the same health problems as those who smoke. Secondhand smoke also causes pneumonia and bronchitis which affects more than 300,000 people each year. Many people who are exposed to secondhand smoke also experience burning eyes, bad coughs, upset stomach, and headaches.

9 Methods and programs to quit smoking Acupuncture: use of needles or staple like attachments in the ear or nose to relieve withdrawal symptoms. Hypnosis: used to increase personal motivation to stop smoking by post hypnotically suggesting a link between smoking and unpleasant experiences. Nicotine gum: help alleviate such withdrawal symptoms as irritability, anxiety, problems in concentration, restlessness, and hunger. Nicotine patch: to deliver a constant level of nicotine in order to reduce withdrawal symptoms.

12 Short term/Long term affects of marijuana After awhile: Get dependent on it Don’t experience emotions Parents get angry Have less money Trouble at school Grades go down Start skipping school After a long time: Burnout Possible lung damage (each joint may have as much tar as 5 cigarettes) Damage to reproductive health
