Psych 11 Kabotoff Unit 1: Intro

 the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour  Uses theories as a framework for research  Has two main disciplines:  Research  Applied psychology

 The word psychology comes from the Greek word psyche meaning ‘breath, spirit, soul’ and the Greek word logia meaning ‘study of’

 Studied humans and animals and how they adapted differently based on their environment  Theory of Evolution “origin of species” 1859  Human brains and that of a chimpanzee were similar  Was he the first psychologist?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7X33g6eoOc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7X33g6eoOc

 1879 – he opened the first laboratory, mainly studied human sensation and emotion  Research based on asking subjects to ‘look within’ = introspection

 analyze the adult mind (defined as the sum total of experience from birth to the present) in terms of the simplest definable components and then find the way in which these components fit togethermind  Wundt – consciousness, feelings, perception, developing field of experimental psych – German from the University of Heidelberg

 William James (late 1800s)  Suggested that scientists study how and why humans behave the way they do  Believed that humans were unique individuals with unique set of circumstances  Suggested that there were causes, consequences and underlying reasons to explain behaviour

 James, later Angell and Dewey – moving to applied psych  Aka functionalism – the capability of the mind as a whole vs studying particular sections or scenarios

 Austrian physician, studied the unconscious and effect of trauma and experiences of the early childhood, slight fascination with sexuality and abnormal behaviour  Original psychoanalysis – a theory of the human psyche, a therapy for the relief of its ills, explaining society  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCtm0F SGZus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCtm0F SGZus

 Freud wasn’t always a hero… Freud wasn’t always a hero…  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQaqXK7z 9LM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQaqXK7z 9LM  Response journal:  Can you think of a traumatic experience from your childhood that has had a serious impact? (discuss or not) but recount how you felt  What do you understand about psychoanalysis/neuroses? Dream interpretations? Jokes?  What are your thoughts about children and Freud’s phallic traits? Issues with intimacy based on early experiences?

 John B Watson (1913) wanted to bring the science into psych – we behave based on stimulus and response  B.F. Skinner - inspired by Pavlov (dogs salivate on sight of meat, study of reflexes, conditioning)  Believed in the ideal environment (baby box), utopian society, taught his pigeons to play ping pong

 movement in psychology  supports belief that humans, as individuals, are unique beings and should be recognized and treated as such by psychologists and psychiatrists  Reaction to behaviorists, structuralists, popular in US in the 1960s  Carl Rogers-humans are creatures of free will and choice

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4GtCc2 Z6NI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4GtCc2 Z6NI  What about the environment of the 60s influenced the development of this approach to psychology?

 Study of human cognition (processing) regarding learning and behaviour  Two main schools:  Piaget and stages of development – how an individual views the world, learns is affected by his stage in development  Information processing – brain is like a computer

 Ecclecticism – psychologists today construct their own models with a collection of these main theories-like shopping for an outfit from many different stores
