Humanistic Psychologist focused on the ways healthy people strive for self-determination and self- realization. Two theorists wanted to see the world through people’s eyes, not a researchers: A. Abraham Maslow B. Carl Rogers

Self-actualization: the process of fulfilling our potential. Maslow studied healthy creative people instead of troubled cases. Humans are born good and strive for positive personal growth.

Carl Rogers (1902 – 1987) Born in Oak Park, IL One of the founders of humanistic psychology. One of the 6 most influential psychologist of the 20 th century. Created the person-centered approach to understanding personality.

Rogers’ believed growth come from genuineness, acceptance, and empathy. Genuine: Open with their feelings. Accepting: unconditional positive regard, an attitude of total acceptance toward another person. Empathy: sharing our feelings and reflecting our meanings. (listening)

Rogers and Maslow asked people to self-assess, fill out surveys and report on their self-concept. Sometimes these methods were impersonal and we could only understand personal experiences through interviews.
