2015-2016 Welcome!

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Saint Patrick School. The seventh and eighth grade teaching team is excited to start this year strong. We understand the relationship between the parent/guardian and teacher is important in your child’s success throughout the year. Let us all do our best to keep communication lines open.

The 7 th grade curriculum focuses mainly on Physical Science with several connections to Earth Science, Life Science and Technology. Physical Science is composed of both chemistry and physics. Students will participate in various labs and projects throughout the school year to reinforce their content knowledge. The 8 th grade curriculum focuses on Earth Science. The Non-Regents Earth Science curriculum also involves some Life Science and New York State Grade 8 Exam review. The Regents students will participate in 1200 mandatory laboratory minutes as per the Earth Science Regents Course requirements. Both classes will partake in several projects throughout the school year. Science

This years mathematics course is called Accelerated Grade 7 Mathematics. This course consists of a rigorous curriculum and each student must be committed to the guidelines mapped out for this course. The curriculum will follow the seventh grade Common Core Standards. Unit 1- The Number System Unit 2- Ratios and Proportional Relationships Unit 3- Expressions, Equations and Inequalities Unit 4- Geometry Unit 5 Statistics Unit 6- Probability Unit 7- Real Numbers, Exponents and Scientific Notation Unit 8- Linear Relationships and Equations Unit 9- Measurements and Geometry Math- Grade 7

This years mathematics course is called Grade 8 Mathematics. This course consists of a rigorous curriculum and each student must be committed to the guidelines mapped out for this course. In the 7 th grade we will be reading A Long Walk to Water, Lyddie Pygmalion, and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave. The themes are emphasized in the 7 th grade curriculum are Journeys and Survival, Identity, Working Conditions and Slavery. In the 8 th grade, we will be reading Inside Out and Back Again, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Unbroken. The themes we focus on in 8 th grade are Refugees, Taking a Stand, Control, and Japanese American Relations in WWII. We will be annotating, questioning, working with evidence, and looking at different perspectives. We will continue mastering reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as analyzing and evaluating a speaker’s message. We will also be working on grammar and vocabulary. Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned daily and posted in the classroom. Homework is to be completed and returned on the assigned due date. Teachers will post homework to individual class pages. Projects: Each marking period a project is to be completed by the students. Instructions and guidelines will be distributed and discussed in class as they are assigned. Grading rubrics will be made available to the students when the project is assigned. All projects are due on the due date Homework Policy and Projects

Arrival: School begins at 8:30 am, it is expected that all students enter their classroom no later than 8:20 am to be marked present for the school day. Any student arriving after 8:20 am will be marked tardy. At this time announcements are made and prayers are said. Dismissal: The students are not dismissed from the classrooms until 2:40 pm. Walkers are to be picked up on the west side of the building and MUST be signed out by a parent/guardian or the person intended on their walker note. All walker students MUST have a note to be present on the walker line, otherwise the student is sent home via school bus. Please do not enter the school yard and retrieve your child off a bus line. Change of Dismissal: If your child’s routine dismissal is changed, the school must be notified. Parents/guardians MUST send a note with their child in the morning to make office and respective bus line teachers aware they will or will not be on the bus. Please do not e-mail the teachers or office staff of a dismissal change as they may not always receive or read the e-mail in time. Attendance

The class pages can be accessed through the school website, www.spsbayshore.org. The website is typically updated daily and will display homework for the night, important information, upcoming tests/quizzes, etc. Please establish a routine in checking our websites periodically.www.spsbayshore.org Class Websites

PowerSchool is our online grade book with parental access. A consent form must be signed and returned to receive your user name and password to access the students’ individual grades. This will also show your child’s homework completions, quiz/test grades, and project/lab grades. PowerSchool is updated weekly, Monday’s are generally the best time to check. Extra help will be given to those students who need further assistance in understanding the class material. Teachers are available for extra help in the morning at 7:45 am. Students must arrive to extra help with specific questions or concerns on material and proper supplies. Extra Help

Grading 5 Student work is outstanding and consistently goes beyond grade level standards. Student completes work satisfactorily and applies expected skills to work. 2 Student work demonstrates a partial understanding of grade level standards and objectives. Student exhibits inconsistent understanding and application of concepts and skills. 1 Student work demonstrates minimal understanding of grade level standards and objectives; evidences very limited organizational, reasoning and critical thinking skills; completing independent tasks only with assistance, struggles with grade level standards and objectives producing less than expected work.
