DRETNov 2014 About Teaching Leaders What?Who? Where? Why? An education charity delivering quality leadership programmes for middle leaders working in challenging contexts, designed to achieve a measurable impact on student achievement. In 5 years we’ve grown to 1,300 Fellows, Associates & Alumni across 600 schools. Set up in partnership with: Our mission is to address educational disadvantage by growing a movement of outstanding middle leaders from schools working in challenging contexts.

The Headteachers and senior managers provide the vision but middle managers effect the long-term changes, which will raise standards and improve the quality of education.” OFSTED

DRETNov 2014 Who we work with Teaching Leaders works with schools in challenging contexts. Schools are eligible if they have: Our TL Fellows programme is for middle leaders in eligible secondary schools. Our TL Primary programme is for middle leaders in eligible primary schools. Our TL Schools programmes are for middle leaders in all eligible schools. We work in partnership with school delivery partners, including TSAs. Ever 6 FSM of 50% or more or Ever 6 FSM of 25% - 50% AND less than 79% of disadvantaged pupils gain level 4 or above in E & M or Less than 60% of pupils achieve level 4 or above in all of reading, writing & mathematics

DRETNov 2014 The TL Primary Programme In year one, the programme will support groups of middle leaders to address school priorities by developing key leadership skills and building their local and national network. The second year of the TL programme is more intensive, with a focus on equipping participants with the tools to deliver school wide impact. Year 1 of programme School selection Focus on core middle leadership skills Collaborative Impact Initiative Summer weekend induction Group coaching Collaborative review and practice development 9 evening training sessions 1 Day Conference Joint Practice Development Year 2 of programme Individual assessment Focus on extending leadership & mastery Individual Impact Initiative Summer week Residential Individual coaching 9 evening training sessions Online subject communities of practice 3 Day Conferences Alumni programme

DRETNov 2014 Primary Middle Leaders Eligibility Phase leaders, year leaders, maths/english/literacy subject leaders, whole school roles (SENCo, G&T) OR Responsibility for an element of reading, writing or maths beyond their class teacher role. Must be agreed with the head and made clear within the application Suitability AssociatesFellows 0-3 years ML experience No previous ML development High potential middle leaders Can have previous ML development We also look for: alignment with our mission, keeness to learn and develop, an understanding of how they’ll use the programme to address strengths and development areas

DRETNov 2014 Key Features – Primary Associates –2 year programme to develop middle leaders to raise attainment in English and maths –Developed with range of experts, including Russell Hobby of NAHT on our advisory board –First year aimed at developing core ML skills, to build confidence and give MLs the ability and opportunity to take a step up and take greater ownership in their area of responsibility and across the school –We’re asking heads to nominate a team of 3 middle leaders to the first year of the programme – to encourage a culture of collaboration and because MLs work together on an impact project aimed at raising attainment in English and maths –Leadership development sessions cover areas we’ve identified as being key to middle leadership development e.g. running effective meetings, leading a team, using data effectively –Main focus of programme is impact project, aligned with your SIP –3 individual coaching sessions helps to personalise the programme to your school and MLs and ensure the impact project is running effectively –Local network of like-minded middle leaders to share best practice –Heads often comment on quality of facilitation –Programme kicks off with an induction weekend – opportunity to hear from inspirational speakers, get to know network and start planning Impact

DRETNov 2014 Key Features – Primary Fellows One year programme for high potential middle leaders Intensive, stretching and challenging programme Covers areas including facilitation and coaching skills Supports MLs to take a lead in their area of responsibility and across the school Main focus on individual Impact project to raise attainment of disadvantaged pupils 6 coaching sessions to personalise the programme and support MLs to put impact into practice Kicks off with a summer residential Network of local and national like-minded MLs

DRETNov 2014 Impact A narrower gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The gap in progress between disadvantaged pupils and their peers for our Associates is 2 percentage points smaller than the national average for maths and writing and there is no gap at all for reading. Increasing the attainment and progress of low prior attainers, The attainment and progress of low prior attainers in TL schools exceeds those with low prior attainment in all schools. Over 60% of these pupils achieve L4+ in all areas, outperforming all schools nationally by 8 percentage points in maths and reading, and 15 percentage points in writing. Over 85% of low attainers also make expected progress in all areas.
