Each marking period grade is calculated the following way: Formative Assessment (25%) Graded Homework Problems, Graded In-Class Assignments, Quizzes Summative Assessment (75%) Unit Tests and Projects Pre Calculus/Trigonometry Course Description & Requirements Greg Wetzel Email: gwetzel@cbsd.org Voice Mail: 267-893-2500 ext.47228 What will we be learning: This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Algebra 2/Trigonometry and Geometry/Trigonometry. Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry is an extension of the concepts covered in the two prerequisite courses with an emphasis on the functional aspects necessary for preparation for the study of calculus. Polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions are addressed in this course. Trigonometric topics include the solution of the trigonometric equations, identify manipulations, and transformation graphing, including amplitude, period, and phase shift. Analytic Geometry topics include conic sections: circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. Course Outline Unit 1: Algebra 2/Trig Review Unit 2: Higher Degree Polynomial Functions Unit 3: Exponential & Logarithmic Functions Unit 4: Conic Sections Unit 5: Triangle Trig & the Unit Circle Unit 6: Graphing Trigonometric Functions Unit 7: Trigonometric Identities & Solving Trigonometric Equations Unit 8: Limits (time-permitting) Expectations: This course covers a lot of material and is very fast paced. To have a successful semester, keep the following in mind: DO your homework regularly, LISTEN carefully, TAKE good notes and USE them, stay FOCUSED in class, and let me know immediately if there is something you do not understand. This course focuses on the understanding of concepts and expects understanding from prerequisite courses. Assessment: Students will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the semester in an attempt to measure their overall understanding of the content standards of Pre Calculus/Trig. Assessments will fall under two main categories: Formative and Summative. Formative assessments are designed to inform the student and teacher regarding the student’s current progress. Summative assessments are designed to be cumulative in nature and are used to determine whether the student has met the course standards and objectives. These will occur less frequently, usually at the conclusion of a unit. In the end, the student’s overall grade reflects their understanding of the course and their preparedness for the next sequential course (typically Calculus 1 or AP Calculus AB). Final course grades will be calculated as follows: Marking Period – 40% Core Assessment 1 – 3% Core Assessment 2 – 3% Multiple-choice Final Exam – 14% Grading Policies: 1)Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. 2)Homework will be checked for completion most days and will be recorded as a 1 (complete) or a 0 (incomplete) in infinite campus. Homework will not count for a grade if it is only checked for completion. 3)On a random basis, homework will be collected and key problems will be graded toward your Formative Assessment grade. 4)Completing nightly practice problems is essential for success in this class. It is expected that students complete all homework. 5)Homework will be reviewed each day based on student questions. 6)All work must be completed in pencil to receive credit. 7)Tests will be announced approximately one week in advance; quizzes may or may not be announced. General Classroom Rules 1.RESPECT – Respect for yourself, your classmates, your teacher, our custodian, and all classroom property (including technology) are necessary. 2.PREPARATION – Bring to class your homework, organized binder, pencil and graphing calculator EVERY DAY! Assessments completed in pen will not be accepted. In order to succeed, preparation is absolutely necessary. 3.ATTITUDE – How you approach this class, subject and each problem is important. Having a positive attitude and outlook will help you be a more successful student. 4.RESPONSIBILITY – It is your responsibility to do your homework, take notes, and study. Take an active role in your education! 5.BEHAVIOR – Excellent behavior is expected. Being disruptive or disrespectful is NOT tolerated and will result in a detention or further disciplinary action. In general, if the teacher is speaking to the class, you are listening. If I write it, you write it; any notes on the Promethean Board or Power Point are done for the benefit of the students, and are expected to be written down by each student. 6.EFFORT – Along with having a positive attitude, effort is mandatory. Mathematics is not a spectator sport. It requires work, practice, and effort. You must show effort by showing your work on ALL assignments. If you do not show work and your thinking process, you will not receive credit. Policies and Procedures 1.ABSENCES – You are responsible for all missed work. This includes any notes, in-class activities, groupwork and homework. You have one day for each day you have missed to make up any work. If you only miss a test/quiz review day, you are still expected to take the test/quiz the following day. If you are absent, please view my website for notes, PowerPoints, and assignments. 2.PUNCTUALITY – Please be in your seat and beginning the warm-up as the bell rings. Lateness is only acceptable if you have a pass from a teacher. Habitual lateness without a pass will result in an after school or a Saturday detention. 3.CHEATING – Cheating will not be tolerated in any form. Do not look at other classmates’ papers, talk to another student, pass any materials, signal, or use unauthorized materials during tests and quizzes. You will receive a zero, a phone call home, and the offices will be notified accordingly. Copying is unacceptable and both students will be disciplined. If you are not sure whether an action is cheating, always ask the teacher (e.g. Storing formulas or example problems in your calculator IS cheating!). 4. CALCULATORS – The math department of the Central Bucks School District recognizes the use of calculators as a valuable tool for learning in the math classroom. The graphing calculator is an essential part of this course for all CB students. It will be needed on a daily basis. As a result, all students need to have access to a graphing calculator for this course, for both in the classroom and as part of out of class assignments. We recommend purchasing a TI-83 or TI-83+ graphing calculator. Not having a calculator is an unacceptable excuse for failing to complete homework assignments. Students may not share calculators on tests/quizzes. 5.EXTRA HELP – Extra help is available before school, in homeroom, or during C lunch daily. Please speak with me at least one day in advance so that we can set up a time that fits our schedules. 6.CELL PHONES – As per the Central Bucks West cell phone policy, any student using their cell phone in class for any non-school related reason will receive a cell phone referral. See the cell phone policy posted in class for full details. During and after assessments, technology is not permitted under any circumstances. 7.HOMEWORK – Completing nightly practice problems is essential for success in this class. It is expected that students complete homework. Homework will be reviewed each day.

Second Chance Learning Second chance learning is an opportunity available in many of the middle schools. It provides an opportunity for students who do poorly on a unit test with a “second chance” to demonstrate proficiency with the material with which they had previously struggled. Students will be allowed to take a retest on up to three unit tests during the semester for which they do not meet proficiency (score under a 70%) provided they meet the following criteria: 1.The student must have ALL homework assignments completed for the unit. 2.The student must have an up-to-date, complete, and organized notebook containing all notes, activities, homework, quizzes, etc for the unit. 3.The student must come in for at least one extra help session (before/after school) prior to taking the retest. 4.The extra help and retest must take place within one week of the return of the original test. 5.The teacher may determine that a student does not qualify for a second chance opportunity if the student frequently does not pay attention during class, is off task, or is disruptive. The score that will be counted will be an average of the original score and new score. The maximum grade that can be earned is a 70%. Technology Use Agreement You will be using CFF laptops as a valuable educational tool in our classroom. Throughout this semester, you must adhere to some guidelines when using the equipment. If you cannot follow the guidelines provided, you will lose laptop privileges for portions of (or the rest of) the semester. Laptop Guidelines: 1. Use two hands when carrying the laptop. 2. Laptops must be placed on your desk at all times. 3. Before you close the computer, you must exit all open windows, shut down the computer, and wait for the screen to be blank. 4. If you become a distraction with the laptop you will lose privileges. 5. You may not use any software or navigate to any website that is not part of the assigned class activity. 6. When you return the laptop, you must plug in the proper charge cord after placing the laptop in its appropriate place. 7. Viewing inappropriate material on the internet is not acceptable. If while on task and researching appropriate material and something inappropriate appears, contact the teacher immediately. Your Final Course Grade will determine your recommended placement for your next math class: -- If you earn at least an “A-”, you will be eligible to move on to AP Calculus AB. -- If you earn a B- to B+, you could move to Calculus 1. -- If you earn a C- or higher, you could take Advanced Math Concepts or Statistics & Data Analysis. -- If you earn a D+ or lower, you should repeat this course. At the end of the semester, each student may check-in for the teacher’s recommendation.
