3 Consider whether a safer means of access could be used

4 Use of ladders Short duration - up to 30 minutes Light work - up to 10kg

5 Use on firm level surfaces

6 Base of ladders secured with footing device

7 Have a strong upper resting point (not gutters, glazing etc) A stand off device may be required

8 Ladders must be at the correct angle 1in 4 (75 degress)

9 When using a ladder for access to another level, the ladder must extend ladder at least 1 metre above the landing point.

10 Using ladders on sloping surfaces 16˚ 6˚ Rungs must be levelled with a suitable device.

11 Good practice – maintain 3 points of contact

12 Bad practice – 3 points of contact not maintained

13 Bad practice – overreaching, not 3 points of contact Belt buckle should be within stiles

14 Safe use of stepladders

16 Use of stepladders Short duration - up to 30 minutes Light work - up to 10kg

17 Use on firm level surfaces

18 Only use stepladders in the fully opened position. Do not climb a stepladder which is closed (i.e. like a ladder) Stepladders are not suitable for access to another level.

19 When working on soft ground use a board to improve stability

20 Good practice – steps facing work activity

21 Bad practice – steps side on to activity

22 Good practice – top 3 steps clear

23 Bad practice – working on top, no handrail

24 Pre-use inspection of ladders and stepladders

25 Ladders & stepladders must have a current inspection tag Equipment belonging to other depts must not be used!

26 Missing feet – ladder/stepladder will wobble

27 Bent or twisted rungs and dented stiles

28 Loose connections

29 Damaged bar on stepladder

30 Remember: Always consider whether a safer means of access could be used.
